Gilstrap's pro potential

I'm curious what everyone thinks of Gilstrap's potential as an NBA player. Would he benefit from another year (if he gets it) or should he go and make some money.

I saw one draft that had him going 40th but several others that didn't mention him.

I personally think he will do well. His size, range and athletisism translate pretty well to the pro game. I hope he comes back, but I wouldn't blame him if he left.

My feelings on Gilstrap are about the same as they were about Brackins last year at this point...

He'll go to the NBA. Whether he has a long, successful career, that's the better question. Imagine what NBA talent guards could do for his game.....

I hope he gets a look at least. He has the physical tools. He needs to learn how to play defense better but every college player does when they get in the league. I think he could be really good on a team like the Knicks with D'Antonio.

If he has a shot, he should go - period. Even if he can come back here for another year. I would say this in over 80% of the stay or go situations, including my beliefs about Brackins from last season.

Whether he can or not, I don't know. I think he has many of the tools.

I agree. His best games are coming against some of the best teams in the country. He's more than holding his own against future NBA players.

Right now he's averaging in the Big 12 after four games:

Points: 18.0
Rebounds: 12.25
Blocks: 1.0
FG%: 46%
3pt%: 50%

If he keeps that up he'll put himself in a really good position to head to the NBA after this season. He'll probably slow down a bit but averaging a double double in the Big 12 in your first year gets you looks.

He may not have enough offense to be a starter but will at least be an excellent
wing off the bench for an up tempo team.

as much as i love gilstrap,and his gaudy numbers i don't think he is close to the NBA yet. His handles are terrible, and he doesn't pass well. With a year to work on that stuff he could be really good. I think his game will improve a lot with the addition of Phillips, of course if he gets a second year. How old is he? this could be factor in him leaving or returning.

I agree with this, he's really raw offensively but his athleticism should give him a shot at the next level. Hopefully he'll come around and catch on with someone, he deserves it after what he's been through.

I agree, handle is a big issue. He's likely a 3 in the NBA game, and you need a solid handle to play that position. Doubt he's a first-rounder until he can show ability to change direction off the dribble and score.

Still love the dude, though.

Um, no. What are you watching? His handles are very good for the position he plays. Does he have 2 guard handles? Maybe not. But he's shown impressive handles at the 3 position so far (At the COLLEGE level). Hell, I'd even go as far to say he looks at times to be the second best ball handler on our team.

You don't get to the hoop like he does without being able to dribble very effectively...

He's strong with the right hand. Gotta change direction better at the NBA level. Not saying he isn't decent with the ball, just don't think he's a 1st rounder until he can show more with the left hand.
