Re: I was Looking At Morgan's Last Season
Please tell me who we could have made head coach when morgan was let go then or even eustachy. Where was the huge list of candidates? Who wanted to come here? Wayne Morgan had two years left on his contract. He didn't have to be let go. We were a relevant program again in March of 06' and could have recieved many more job inquiries than the summer of 03'when only Wayne Morgan wanted the job. And what did WM get for stopping the bleeding and keeping us relevant...a big screw you-screw you very much from the donors, our AD and the fans. And speaking of the ISU coaching job in the summer of 03' ...why didn't our current beloved coach jump on it then?

Im sorry but we are not a huge power in mens bball, yeah we have had some great success, but being compleely honest with ourselves, we're no where close to being an elite program. I don't think people who keep comparing GMAC with coaches like coach K and coach Williams recieved that memo. They think if it can happen their........it can happen here.
Because he had not lead UNI to 3 straight NCAA tournament appearances yet.

Re: I was Looking At Morgan's Last Season

    Food for thought.

Morgan had a .578 winning record. For the rest of this year and all next season, McDermott will have to win 80-85% of future games including deep tournament play to match Morgan's winning percentage and this will have to probably be done without Brackins and Gilstrap.

Happens in the NBA all the time man. Corey Maggette went 3-22 from the field the other night and they just kept on playing him (because he was like 13-16 from FT). They even allowed him to take the last shot.

There are a LOT of coaches who would have kept Stinson in believe it or not. When your star player is shooting poorly, MANY coaches have the "keep shooting it bud, you'll get the rhythm" mentality. It's very surprising, but what Morgan did that game is really nothing out of the ordinary if you pay attention to basketball and when star players have a horrible game.

Re: I was Looking At Morgan's Last Season

I think all those close losses being cited by the OP were the downfall of Morgan.

What was frustrating was we were always so close to winning those games and our fanbase saw a lack of fundamental basketball at the end of the game. I'm not saying it's better now, I'm just saying that that impression is what pushed Morgan out the door. With Morgan we always had the ability to stay in the game and be in the position to win under because of the talent that was on the floor and the defensive pressure that could swing things back our way in a hurry, but when we needed one good possession at the end of the game to get that last bucket (those 10 games) it wasn't a thought out, drawn up play that got it for us.

Even in the end of game situation Morgan let the players go out there and try to make something happen by their own skill. Which in turn led us to going after a coach with a highly touted offense. Our fans thought at a big 12 school McD could come in and recruit the same level of talent as Morgan and then get them to play within his system and that would put us over the top. We (myself included) didn't realize the drop off that would occur talent wise when Morgan got canned.

What Morgan didn't and still doesn't get credit for is the players and press that kept us in all those games. The bashing he takes stems from lack of any apparent form of organized half court offense. His teams scoring came from turnovers and fast breaks but if we got into a half court situation like at the end of a close game we were boned.

No, not quite (but feel free to keep stretching the truth) He won that under Boheim as an assistant.

In his previous last stop (as a head coach) he was canned from Long Beach State.

Feel free to keep being wrong and accusing others of stretching the truth. Why do people who don't even know what they are talking about feel the need to rip others who do?

And shortly thereafter he was canned. Wonder why? Player discipline? Cheating? Funny how WM couldn't hold a job with all this "success".

Wayne was canned at Long Beach State because the fans weren't happy with one conference title and NIT appearance in 5 years. Sadly, Long Beach State fans have higher expectations for their program than do Mcdermott's fans on this site.

And this guy you are trashing was significantly more successful at ISU than our current coach in every meaningful way. Its like bizarro world here. So if he did such a bad job, then what do you call these past 4 years?

Yep, they had higher expectations than one conference title and an NIT appearance. Of course, have they been better since firing him? Not really.

ISU used to also have higher expectations.

Re: I was Looking At Morgan's Last Season

What's Morgan up to these days? The answer to this question explains a lot.

My tipping point with him was the A&M game. Up 3 with A&M on final possession and we come out of a time out in a 2-3 zone. A wide open 3 later and we go to OT and lose.
    I'll take a Jack & Hilton

Wayne Morgan cheated? That's news to me...hahahaha, I'm sure you still think the Dennis Dodd "scandal" was a scandal even though no ISU fan knew it had any substance or weight then of course it was cleared up a week or two later to be nothing. Just wow. I can't believe you still believe that ****.
