Any talk of expansion makes me cringe because, like a lot of people, the system has grown into a perfect little setup. But I'm also old enough to remember how there was an outcry whenever the field went up (can't recall the exact progression -- 32 to 40 to 48 to 64, or something like that) -- and how some people thought a 64-team tournament was completely insane. So with the growth of D-1 schools over the past decade, I assume an increase will come at some point (even if $ weren't a factor). And I'd probably be OK with a few more games during the tournament in theory.
But, if it comes to pass, my only requests: (1) Go straight to 128 teams. Do not pass Go. One of the tournament's assets is symmetry. (2) Make the change with thorough forethought as it applies to tradition (that is, keep the auto-bid/at-large system as intact as possible - I can explain that in full later if anyone wonders); (3) make sure the change isn't made purely to avoid bubble-team controversies (because, if we went to 96 teams, you know what would be the biggest grudge point for invitees? Who gets the 8 and who gets the 9 seed -- 9 would play 24; 8 gets a bye).
I have other thoughts but that's enough for now.
It's just a powerplay by Jamie Pollard to get McD into the NCAA tournament and shut Monty up. Very sneaking with the game changing there...
