Ugly possibility
I was looking up some more numbers after posting my most recent blog update, and I ran across this doozie: Lynn Nance through Wayne Morgan, Iowa State has never lost more than six home games in a season. More recently, Floyd, Eustachy, and Morgan all had one 6-loss season, but those seasons were the exception. With McDermott, they've been the norm, to date.
We currently sit at 6 home losses. If we lose one of our final two home games, it will be the most home losses since the 1975-76 season, when we went 2-10 at home. I'm guessing 90% of the people on this board weren't alive during that season.
It's not my intent to rag on McDermott, but this would be an ugly addition to the resume. -
Re: Ugly possibility
If you want to rag on him fine, but don't look into 30+ years of history looking for a stat and then say your intent is not to rag on him. Maybe you're not ragging on him but you were looking for a stat to make this season look bad and therefor make him look bad, which is fine, just don't say you aren't.

Don't confuse hope for a plan. -

Look, the OP is as fair to McDermott as anyone I know, and as optimistic/hopeful of a Cyclone fan as you'll meet. The fact that he's calling this into question shows how horrible things look statistically. Originally Posted by HiltonMagic is there a stat available to make him look good? No, there isn't.

I've been more than fair to McDermott, and I would encourage you to read my first extensive blog post. I've defended him tooth and nail for 3+ years, but the numbers are what they are. I'm not skewing anything to fit an agenda.

No, there isn't. I know it wasn't his intent. I am frustrated and have been, I shouldn't have even posted that because I know he is fair. It's just that 30 year stats don't need to be said to tell the story of how bad we are. I have actually looked very hard to find a positive stat and the only thing I can come up with relates to how we are not losing by as much as we were last year. When I start doing statistical analysis in hopes we are just losing by less things are bad. I can do messed up things with numbers and I can not even find something positive.

We've seen these numbers posted over and over again. It's just getting old describing the ways we suck. You'd think at some point we'd be out of flower petals to pluck and just quit stating the obvious.

It's weird thinking back that Hilton barely got 5,000 attendance to some games that season. I mean some games might barely have broken 3,000

I will also be the first to admit I don't know a lot of historical details. I got hammered on that the other day. I haven't been a Cyclone fan for that long. Probably 7 or so years. I don't have things in my head, I have to look stuff up sometimes for historical facts. I know Orr built this place, Floyd built upon that, Larry continued and won championships, Wayne tried and Mac at this point has brought it down.

Re: Ugly possibility
Wow. Excellent blog with some painful numbers.
I was surprised to see that Morgan was 6-3 at home over ranked opponents, and 2-1 during his bad season. Morgan is no Bill Self, but his coaching has been consistently underrated by many Cyclone fans.
The fact that Gmac is 0-20 against ranked opponents is the #1 thing about these past 4 years that really deflates my hope for the future with him as coach. Good coaches rise up and beat better teams, at least occasionally... especially at home.
