Numbers Everyone Must See
I haven't started a new thread in something like two years so I decided I better make it a good one if I'm going to start a new one. You may have seen bits and pieces of this posted in other threads.
Here's how GMac's record compares to other coaches who were fired or forced to resign in the last few years:
STILL COACHING
Greg McDermott, Iowa State, 58-67 after almost 4 seasons (all losing records)
FIRED
Wayne Morgan, Iowa State, 55-39 after 3 seasons (one NCAA, one NIT)
Dave Leitao, Virginia, 63-60 after 4 seasons (one NCAA, one NIT, one CBI)
Sean Sutton, Okie State, 39-29 after 2 seasons (two NIT berths)
Brad Soderberg, St. Louis, 80-74 after 5 seasons (two NIT berths)
Quinn Snyder, Mizzou, 126-91 after 7 seasons (four NCAA, two NIT)
Why should ISU fans expect any less from their program than these other fine universities did from their program?
Take a look at Quinn Snyder's record after 7 seasons. McDermott will have to go 68-24 over the next three seasons just to catch up to Quinn Snyder's record! And Snyder was fired because his record wasn't good enough!!! Mizzou fans have been demanding more from both their MBB and football coaches and it is starting to show with the success that Pinkel and Anderson are having.
Please tell me again why GMac deserves a fifth season at our beloved ISU. Don't use the defections excuse. Part of being a successful coach is retaining your top players. That includes retaining the top players from your predecessor (guys like S. Taggart and T. Carr).

Obviously from all statistical perspectives, ISU would be completely justified in dismissing McDermott.
But, when considering expectations, there is more to consider. It is a perfectly legitimate stance to say that ones expectations are not met, yet they don't think the coach should be fired. There are more variables that go into a firing/keeping decision that whether expectations are met or not.

No worries. Gmac has 2 games left as an ISU coach.

You make good points i agree. Why should we expect any less than those other schools we have just as much history or more than them.

Re: Numbers Everyone Must See
Why did you include Sutton? He clearly had issues completely unrelated to coaching. I don't think you can use him as an argument to fire McD.

Re: Numbers Everyone Must See
I could make an argument that Sutton, Snyder and Morgan were fired for reasons different than record.
No, expectations shouldn't be lowered.

Heck I would take 15-15, 27-4, 26-5 over that time

He has had 4 years to try and do that and there is nothing in the works that makes a person think he would do any better.
NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section. -

No, expectations shouldn't be lowered. Mizzou dumped Snyder because he stopped winning. Yes, there were a lot of rumors that he was cheating on his wife and other unscrupulous behavior, but that was all conveniently ignored while he was winning.

He is a nice guy and an Iowa boy. We are destined for success! Those are all the qualities you need to be a successful coach in some fan's eyes.

We shouldn't expect any less.
I'm not going to tell you he deserves anything. That's for Pollard to decide. Write him a letter and include these stats.

Re: Numbers Everyone Must See
Good post! I think my number one stat is the fact he has never beaten 1 top 25 team in his tenure. We are like 0-28 or 0-29. I like coach Mac but im not sure he is going to get us back to where we should be. I would be willing to give him another year if both the 2 jucos and the other big kid with the offer to Indiana come here and everyone stays including Brackins (Gilstrap wont get another year most likely). I would like to see that team. I would consider a last chance. Then again i am thinking it is time right now to make a change. This would be interesting next year however...but Mac probably still wouldnt get it done and Christopherson would still be logging 25 minutes a game. Johnny Orr finishes in the top 5 in the BIG 12 with this team.... I love to daydream...

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
