ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
ISU participated in 20 Big 8 Conference Tournaments and made the Finals 4 times:
1985 - lost to OU 73-71
1986 - lost to KU 73-71
1995 - lost to Okie St 62-53
1996 - beat KU 56-55
ISU has now participated in 14 Big 12 Conference Tournaments and made the Finals 1 time:
2000 - beat OU 70-58
Someday, we will once again be in the Conference Tournament Finals...the only question is when?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

What's your point dude???

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
Even Baylor, who was on the point of no return, has now returned. At least our players aren't killing each other!!!

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
You are very optimistic. Winning is not a priority anymore. "Integrity" is!

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
I was in KC in 1996 and 2000 when we won. It was great. There is still a ton of passion out there for ISU basketball. The program needs some cpr.......or maybe CPR?

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
I already knew that the Big 8 had some bad basketball teams inspired by the Hank Iba style of playing. The Big 12 brought more fertile recruiting areas into play. You are stuck in the 80's. Tell us something that we don't know.

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
You are right Steve. That old ungly '80's style of ball in the Big 8 was horrible. Talk about boring...Slow down 4 corner ball that Oklahoma, Missouri, KU & KState played. Heck, on a good night Johnny would push the tempo and we might score 50 points......Steve, what the hell are you talking about?????? The ball that was played in the Big 8 in the 80's was some of the most exciting. I think you have the Big Ten and Big Eight mixed up!

Re: ISU MBB in Conference Postseason Tournament Finals
The Big 8 was a great time!
Still, I don't think it's news that we haven't reached the Big 12 finals a lot. I don't think that's a McDermott thing. That's an "every coach we've had during the Big 12 era" thing.
This thread is pointless. Dare I say it's worthless without pictures?

I didn't look up the numbers, but when KU makes the finals all the time (atleast it seems like it) that only leaves room for one more team.

With 1/3 less teams in the league, to honestly compare you would need to look at the Big 12 over 1/3 more years ... in other words, we'd need to make 3 finals and win 0 more titles between now and 2026 to perform at the same level.

We know things are not that good right now. Why keep beating this dead horse.

Wow, you apparently didn't see much Big 8 BB in the 80s...the Big 8 of the 80s was one of the best conferences in the country for most of the decade (if not the best). Now, the 70s was a different story. Your ignorance is astounding.
By the way, I just told you something you apparently did not know...of course that is probably a pretty long list of things...I mean the list of things you don't know.

Interesting how you can post something positive...discussion of ISU making the conference post season tournament finals and so many somehow believe that is "negative"...very interesting.

I didn't think that I would have to spell out the difference between some and all. The Big 8 usually had 4 or 5 really good teams and 3 or 4 duds that played Hank Iba style ball. Do the names Tom Apke or Moe Iba mean anything to you? Jack Harman hung on too long at KSU and his teams were an easy game in the 80's. The point being is that you could get an easy 1st round game, knock off one decent team, and then lose in the finals. The point remains that Iowa State's home record and Big 8 tournament success in the 80's did not translate into being a power on the national level.
