Real Reason Greg Still Here
ISU, UNI athletics face end to use of tax money | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register
This is the reason Greg is still our coach. It is right there in black and white. No more wondering why -- it is all about dollars.
People need to ante up and increase donations if you want to see a change.

all that is going to do is eliminate the other sports. they are not going to cut revenue to football and basketball so they can continue with gymnastics or swimming.

They can't cut either of those due to Title IX restrictions I thought. We'll probably lose something like men's cross country.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
ISU athletics is already well on its way to being self-sufficient.
The dumb thing about it is that the department returns any investment by the university many-fold. You could almost consider $$ that are sent to an athletic department marketing funds, as athletics play a huge role in bringing in new potential students to the university, bringing alumni back and keeping alumni connected to the university.

This is a decade of total ineptitude that will destroy our program. The new coach may need more then 3 years because of the hole we are being put in right now.
If we start a McD buyout fund, I have $50 I can send to it right now and I will commit $100/year for the next two years for the buyout. I know it is not much but if a few thousand others start to pony up something similar to this, we are talking about a buyout scenario that can work. We need to do this ASAP...

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
I posted this on Jon's site but I was wondering what everyone thought here. What happens if ISU doesn't comply with Title IX? Is this and NCAA rule and they'll face sanctions or is this from somewhere else? I've always heard that programs need to comply with it, but I've never heard of any school getting in trouble with it or challenging it at all.

The reasons don't matter, he is going to be here regardless.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
I think this is fair. I'm not sure why tax payers who don't have college degrees, and may not even be a fan of a particular state school should have to support men's CC or softball.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
Its definitely about money.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
I think what you need to look at with this is when JP took over, had this happened then, we would have been in a world of hurt. JP has consistently, whether by coincidence or not, brought this AD closer and closer each year to being self sufficient and has put us in a position to withstand this. I don't think that point can be overstated with the current situation.
I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU
Or so I have read. -
Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
Yep, JP has done a great job monetarily with the AD.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
It IS all about the money. Hawkeye fans knew this, and stopped going to games. Not much coming into the arena, and it is time for a new coach. It is bad to say, but if fans keep showing up to Hilton, he will stay. Stop going and that will send a big message.

Re: Real Reason Greg Still Here
I think I was reading that state funds make up about 7% of our athletic budget. I may be wrong though.
We are getting to the point where we will soon be self sufficient. UNI on the other hand will take a big hit if they can't get any state help. I would not be surprised if UNI has to go non scolarship in football in the future.

It's tough to compare the two schools because we are talking about two different budgets. Iowa has a lot more money to play around with than we do.
