I wonder if Lucca was still here if we could then appeal to get his year of eligibility back since technically next season would have been his 3rd one playing?

An argument could be made that we actually benefited a bit from the rule by the NCAA. Had the new rule been in effect at the time, Lucca likely would have taken off midway through or after his sophomore season. The old rule, in effect, forced him to redshirt, giving us a season-and-a-half of more experienced play by Lucca.

We'll definitely find out. Nebraska has a player who is in exactly the same situation as Lucca. They almost certainly will use the new rule as a precedent to try to get his lost time reinstated. If they succeed, we'll know.

Our team didn't exactly work wonders during the time he was playing
