Why basketball is the greatest sport
After watching the most recent NCAA tournament, is there any doubt that college (emphasis on college) basketball is the greatest sport ever played?
Reasons:
1) Unpredictably
2) Cinderella Stories
3) Buzzer Beaters
4) Passionate Players and Coaches
5) Intensity From Tip To Buzzer
6) Surprise Hero's
7) Overcoming Adversity (aka your best player gets injured yet you still win three more games)
8) Triple Overtime Games
9) Games can be decided by mere inches (ie. Haywords last two shots)
10) Tradition
Feel free to add any I missed
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
I also think college basketball is awesome and a blast to watch, but college football ranks right up there as well for me. However, the NCAA tournament is arguably the greatest sporting "event" ever.
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
The tourney is awesome but.........football will ALWAYS be the king for me, NFL and college are both ahead of basketball in my book. If you think of the sports withdrawal you're going through now, for me it's 10x worse when football season ends!! It took me until the end of February to even get interested in BBall.
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
1. NFL playoffs
2. MBB tourney
3. College football
4. NBA playoffs
5. women's olympic beach volleyball
College football would be second most fun to watch if it had a playoff
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
I think you have to have two categories. One is the sports as a whole, one is the best "sports time" of the year.
My rankings
Sports as a whole:
1. NFL (probably because of fantasy football)
2. College basketball
3. College football
Sports times of the year:
1. March Madness
2. Superbowl
3. Bowl game season
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
If you're talking pure action and fast-paced athleticism, basketball is the best game to watch on TV. Furthermore, a basketball game, especially a college game, takes significantly less time than a football game and usually comes in under the 2 hour mark, which baseball often struggles with.
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
Talk of the NCAA tourney being the greatest sporting event should be in the past tense.

Why basketball is the worst sport
- Greed
- Dishonesty
- Pay for players
- Cheaters
- Money grab
- Good to great players play for 1-2 years
- Officiating sucks
- Spoiled athletes

Not if you saw BSU beat Oklahoma or App St. beat Michigan, imo. CFB is the greatest sport on the planet. CBB is great but I can't get into it when the Cyclones aren't contenders. Watching UNI beat KU was awesome though.
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
1.) College Football
2.) College Basketball
3.) Everything else (pro or college)
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
yup, there are questions. I still take college football, nfl, then college basketball. College football is so far ahead of basketball in term of my love I cant even measure it.

- Cheaters - Really? Never heard a story about a basketball player using performance enhancing drugs
- Money grab - Again, football & baseball are the same
- Good to great players play for 1-2 years - In college, sure
- Officiating sucks - Valid point
- Spoiled athletes - Repeat for football & baseball

Agree with Cylent. Not only do 1,2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 apply to football and baseball as well... Baseball suffers from a lot of these more than the other sports.
1. Greed - Scott Boras.. need I say more?
2. Dishonesty - Palmeiro, McGwire: "I did not take PEDs"
3. Pay for Players - not this one for baseball, but it sure applies to college FB.. ever heard of Reggie Bush? or the SMU program?
4. Cheaters - Again with the steroids
5. see #1.
7. Officiating sucks - Valid, but at least basketball uses replay to get it right.. baseball doesn't even have that. it was controversial to even use replay to judge HR validity...
8. Spoiled athletes... yeah, but this applies across the NBA, MLB, and NFL... but who gets paid the most and sits out with the weakest injuries (Sammy Sosa sneeze anyone?) among the bunch? MLB.

I'm sure in 1985 they were saying the same thing. Good thing people get over such trivial matters.
Re: Why basketball is the greatest sport
1. College FB - it's just an event. Tailgating, tradition, College Gameday, big hits, bowl games. Nothing else compares.
2. College BB - Yeah, it's fun, but IMO the AAU circuit has ruined the game. Spoiled players who can't take criticism. NCAA tourney is the best championship going.
3.NFL - If it weren't for FFL, I'd probably have quit watching. I love football, but can't dedicate all day BOTH Sat and Sun to it. CFB is the easy choice. Honestly, I look more forward to the draft than the Super Bowl.
4. Everything else - I'll watch some NBA playoffs. MLB is fun to go to games, but boring on TV....pretty much only good to get drunk to. I watch the majors in golf. And I'll watch some boxing and MMA at times. Basically zero hockey and nascar and women's sports outside of ISU WBB/VB. I do watch ISU wrestling, but not with much interest.
