And you don't hire someone just because you don't think they'll do worse, especially when it's going to cost you $2.5 mil to do so. You don't fire McDermott unless you think there's a damn good chance you can bring in a better coach.

And pardon by skepticism, but no matter how much I wish a change was made immediately, I just don't see Pollard doing so after his ridiculous press conference.

And I don't see Fred being seriously interested in coaching. He might have moved into some sort of coaching role by now if he was interested in coaching.
Don't ask me who I think we should bring in. Anyone who could win 5 conference games a year and get us to the NIT once in 4 years would be an improvement. Hoiberg has publicly stated that he would be interested in being the head coach at ISU someday. He also was interested in being an assistant under GMAC when he was hired.

Re: Time to bring Freddy back to Ames
Not to change the thread - but what about Freddy as an Iowa recruiter/ assistant of some type. Like others said outside of Iowa not many are going to have a clue - but I have a feeling many parents would love to have the Mayor in their homes while he sells their kids on ISU.
But yeah him as head coach doesn't seem to work for me either.

I was at that game. It was his speech when his jersey was retired. I think it was more of a rah rah moment.

The situation has changed since Pollard's press conference. When the press conference was held GMAC had assured Pollard that there wouldn't be turnover in the program like in the past. Now, Hamilton and possibly Colvin are leaving. This time next week I predict we will be in the middle of a coaching search.

I know he has said that. But he has done nothing to make himself a more attractive candidate. He simply can't point to his playing career and expect to be hired. He needs to get into coaching at some level, and show he can win.

Re: Time to bring Freddy back to Ames
If people think a bunch of high quality candidates are going to be lining up to be the next head coach at ISU you are terribly mistaken. The program is in absolute shambles right now.

But yeah him as head coach doesn't seem to work for me either. This state is not really crawling with high d1 talent. You really shouldn't need a quote on quote "Iowa recruiter". The program should speak for itself within it's borders.

He played in the NBA and knows what GMs are looking for and what it takes to play in the NBA. Most all decent high school players are sure they are going to be in the NBA someday. Fred can instantly sell his NBA experience to recruits.

I would agree that Jamie wouldnt fire GMac right unless he thought he could get someone MUCH better. A splash hire, if you will. I would disagree thought that he couldnt find somone better. Hard to get worse than 4 conference wins and 0 postseasons in 4 tries. just about every BCS conference team has managed that.
