better to start now or next year?

Well the writing is on the wall that ISU will not have much of a team next year which will more than likely end McD's run at ISU (like it or not). However if JP waits until the end of next season to bring a new coach in, there goes another year of recruiting and ISU is really bad for 2 more years with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I think the prudent move would be to try to find a new staff now, so they have a chance to start recruiting to ISU now! If McD even tried recruiting next season knowing that he probably doesn't have a job, why would any kid want to committ to him knowing that he won't be here now.

I want McD to succeed at ISU, however with Colvin and the assistants jumping ship I don't see how it is possible.

McD will be using the next 12 months to send out his resume around the country. I'd rather have him do that from home, than from the ISU basketball office.

With the spring signing period only two days away it's too late to do anything now. If we were to let him go we have to wait at least a week to bring in a replacement even if we rushed the process. By then, you aren't going to get anyone to come in for next year and then we may be starting walkons. Not the way you want a new coach to start. Let McD coach this year and barring any type of miracle season then you let the coach come in and try to snatch up as much as you can from the loaded in-state 2012 class. Or go be a hawkeye fan for next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if GMac is back the year after this upcoming season also. Lets face it, everybody knows ISU isn't going to do anything next year. Look for JP to be able to word it somehow to say "look at everyone that has left, and look what Greg has had to deal with." ISU loses it's 2 best players from this year and a 3rd starter as well. ISU is starting over again next year. I see GMac here for at least 2 more years, as much as nobody likes it.

Tried of hearing money issues, GMAC staying will have long term affects that will take years to change

It depends on whether JP blames McD for the transfers. If he somehow still has an optimistic view that these are all just unfortunate events that has nothing to do with McD, then yes I can see that happening. If he lives in reality, then he needs to either let McD go or be 100% positive that the player retention issues are over. I personally don't think that McDermott simply forgot how to coach. I think his inability to coach players for four years is his problem.

Re: better to start now or next year?

I think Mac is here for next year.

    A) If you were to pick the worst week of the year to replace a coach it would be this week that has the signing date.

    B) Most of the top young coaches wanting to move up have already done so, the pool of potential replacements is less than a couple weeks ago.

    C) If we make a replacement I assume most of the signees won't enroll, plus by the time we have a new coach on board the majority of available players will have already signed elsewhere.

    D) Our talent level will be very poor next season. It will probably be much worse if Ejim and Phillips do not enroll and there are no players left for the new coach to recruit.

    E) If we replace the coach immediately at the end of next season the new coach will at least have the opportunity to bring in some of his own recruits to start his program.

There is absolutely no way McDermott is not here next year, at this point. Freaking signing day is this week. You don't get rid of a coach this far into the off-season.

Now does he make it through next season without being canned? That's another argument.

Re: better to start now or next year?

As far as next year is concerned, I just don't think it matters which way you go - we're not going to be a good team next year regardless. That, and posters keep talking about the recruits we might lose if we let go of McDermott now. First, it sounds like the recruits are dropping like flies anyway, and second, are they really such that we're going to be in significantly worse shape next season if we were to lose them?

That being said, at this late stage in the game, exactly what kind of coach are we going to be able to bring in that would be better than McDermott? I mean, unless you give the "new guy" an absolute pass on 2010-11 as he will have absolutely nothing to work with (and we all know how much of a fan some posters of this site are of that idea, as they'll want to hold the new coach accountable from day one, regardless of the crap that he has to work with - and no, I'm not saying that players like Boozer, Dendy, and JVB are crap - we just have nothing to surround them with)

Here's my opinion - if you're going to hire a quality coach with the idea of giving him a 100% pass on 2010-11 and giving him a head start on recruiting for the 2011-12 season, then by all means bring in the new head coach. If you're of the idea that you bring in the new coach, expecting an unrealistic performance out of the coach for 2010-11 and starting the success ticker from day one, you might as well hold onto McDermott for one more season, because if you're expecting success for 2010-11 you're only hiring a new head coach in a lame duck situation.

If we hire a new coach quickly we can still steal all those unsigned recruits that are rumored to be heading to Kentucky, right?

I would agree with the OP. The only good reason, to keep GMac for 1 more year is then Tim Floyd might be sick of El Paso, TX and be ready to come back to ISU.
