Alright, didn't read through the rest of the thread because it's epically long... But has Colvin stated where he is going? Other than Hamilton to LSU, we haven't really lost people to BCS programs, so it shouldn't be that big of an issue, just another average player that didn't get as many minutes as he felt he should have.
(Feel free to correct if I'm wrong on the the BCS program part)
I keep coming back to this: One of the main signature points of GMac's coaching philosophy is continuity — a core group of players in the system for multiple seasons, developing chemistry, whole-better-than-sum-of-its-parts. With constant player turnover, that goes out the window.
GMac miscalculated overall talent level early on – the first 3 seasons he tried to balance a roster of "system" players and hook it to a go-to player, and also refused to develop newcomers because he had less-talented (but hard-working) veteran players who bought-in.
I guess he needed to totally suck in Season 1 (I mean really, really bad), and maybe have a horrible second season, too — but that's easy to say in retrospect.
I pretty much agree with this, especially the first paragraph. More than the talent of the players leaving, this is why the constant turnover is killing us, and why we're not any better than Mac's first year with no hope to get any better under him for another 2-3 years. For Mac to succeed, we're going to need 2-3 years of continuity. It's now all but impossible to think we're going to have that.
I think there is a very good chance of this; however, you will see his ugly side come out every time things don't go his way. He will implode every time he either doesn't get enough playing time or his team is losing.
How can you possibly know this? Let me assure you that you cannot.
If Colvin was going to be here next year, how many minutes per game do people think he would play? I'd say at least 20-25. The spin patrol is out in full force here.
