I am not sure if you are referring to whole thread or just some posts, but reality is things have changed in last couple days b/c of the aforementioned recruits who won't be signing.
Yeah I know Gmac is going to be here, and quite frankly, I think it would be a mistake on April 20th to make a change, so I am not advocating that. I am however pointing out that the odds of him turning it around next season went down rather significantly this week. Nothing would make me happier than a break out job saving year next year from Greg. I think with key experienced players we were targeting going elsewhere it is even less likely to happen.
I don't understand the fans that want to see GMac fail so he will get fired. For one thing, unless he does something that JP can fire him for and not have to pay a buyout, then he is going to be coaching at ISU next year and quite possibly the year after. JP has an agenda and he is going to stick to it. The best we can hope for is GMac doing okay next year and getting some recruits. If not, the cupboard will be as bare as anyone could imagine and ISU will look like an extremely unattractive job.
I'm not a Crean fan.
Nobody wants to see Gmac fail. Its just pretty damn clear at this point that he has failed so far, and it doesn't appear likely that is going to change going forward.
One of the main things that could have helped Gmac succeed going forward was signing at least a decent spring recruiting class, as we have tons of holes to fill and playing time to sell. So far, we have whiffed on our main targets. This will make it even harder for Gmac to succeed going forward, and increase the likelhood that he leave sthe cupboard bare, as you are worried about.
Why? Based on recent history, 80% of the past coaches in the last 25 years have succeeded here (lets define success as making the NCAA NCAA Tourney and winning at least a game).
If you take out our current coach, 100% of the past coaches in the last 25 years have succeeded here.
So I am sorry, but the facts indicate that your opinion on this matter is wrong. The facts state it would make a difference, and 80% of recent coaches have been successful here.
Times have changed CloneIce. It isn't getting any easier for ISU to be successful in MBB.
If GMac is replaced in the future, I highly doubt the next coach will find any immediate success. This fanbase is going to have to decide how patient they are willing to be.
That's just not true. I know of several posters who hope he fails. One in particular plainly said that he would be cheering for ISU to lose next year, and that's something that I just don't understand.
Whether you love or hate G-Mac, the fact of the matter is that Pollard has made his decision, and Greg is not going anywhere for at least this next year. That's a fact. It's not going to change.
I guess I would rather spend the next year rooting for my favorite team, even though I might not like the coach, than rooting against them, in hopes that their lack of success will force Pollard's hand. To me, that's the whole point of being a fan. When the chips are down, you yell louder, because your favorite team needs to hear you now more than ever. And if the situation doesn't improve next year or the year after, and a change is made, I'm going to yell and cheer for the next guy.
The only hope now is the new coaching hires we have coming can bring some talent with them. Really wish we knew more about the 2nd hire. I know next to nothing about what Nurse has for recruiting connections at this point. He's obviously been doing D-league for 2 years and was in Europe since '96 before that. Which is only relevant if he is even one of them.
I think whoever fills the coaching spots is going to tell us more at this point than who our potential recruits are (if we have any). There's no way we are going with like 11 guys. A couple injuries, grade problems, or Colvin type issues and you're suiting up grad assistants just to scrimmage.
As bad as things seem to be there is no way McD does not have something he's trying to get done right now (even if a long shot). He obviously hasn't gotten anything done at Iowa State but he's not so incompetent that he plans on banking a quarter of our scholarships. If he was you'd think JP would know and will pull the plug .
I know everyone wants to paint the JP and McD situation as so bad they aren't competent, but they are both wanting to succeed and they have to realize the current situation prevents that.
There's got to be something in the works, and if there is I'm not surprised no one knows about it because it seems the staff believes (rightly or wrongly) that message boards are killing recruiting. So with that logic they'll keep everything close to the hip so we won't be able to talk about the merits of the recruits we have.
And some people call those who are against GMac the negative ones.
I think that thinking ISU is such a bad place that its fans shouldnt expect what almost every other BCS program has done (and all others have had coaching switches) and be able to make a postseason in a 4 year period is far more negative than anything thats said by those who want GMac fired. If we dont think we can do what every single other BCS team can do, then we might as well fold up our basketball program and tear down hilton.
