This might be a really interesting coaching search (Im hoping we have one anyway).
Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy were names that threw us for a loop at first. Heres to hoping we find a new great coach.
Dunphy out of Temple is one coach I would look into.
The Larry or Floyd answer is pretty lame and lazy. Like Ive said before.. its like being single for a while and asking out all your ex gfs thinking it would be great.... then realizing later why shes your ex.
Not sure we can get anyone better at this stage of the year and with the current state of the program. I really wish this would have taken place 3-4 weeks earlier or next March.
So, now that it seems incredibly likely if not a done deal that McD is gone. Who is our next head coach?
I am going to go ahead and say I think Nick Nurse would be a good hire. I am saying that now because if he does get the position anyone who states it is a good hire will be called out as a JP apologist.
Here is why I think he is a good fit for us right now:
Look at the current off-season D1 hires. Even Universities like Oregon or Iowa where money is next to no object are getting lackluster hires. Altman is good but it's not some major name coup like we would consider an amazing hire. As for McCaffery from Siena, he is not a very sexy hire for a name your coach salary offer. My conclusion is you can not get that break through Orr type hire right now even if you come up with the cash for it.
Nurse qualifications:
-Major Success with the NBA D-league. You don't get that without knowing your stuff coaching wise. You also have to be able to deal with the major ego personality type conflicts you have from Big 12 caliber talent. Absolutely has an ability to evaluate talent, and an ability to deal with player turnover (called up to NBA).
-give him a couple assistants who can recruit and we're talking a Big 12 staff.
-keep Grayer on to relate to players and to provide one more I know what it takes to get you to the NBA authority. Also leaves someone around who truly believes in and cares about the program and the fans will back.
Those are my thoughts, who do you guys think is on the short list?
Utah Utes, Illinois Illini. The University of Pennsylvania thought about following this pattern by calling themselves the Pennsylvania Pencils. However, they were afraid their students would start chanting "We're No. 2"
