If anyone is a laughing stock it is Creighton for hiring a guy with such a pathetic record...his record at ISU is horrendous and his glory years at UNI pale in comparison to what they have done after he left.
If we commit to paying the right guy we will be in much better shape...MUCH BETTER SHAPE.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: The program would get worse
Another thing is do the math on this. 1 more year at ISU for $2.5 mil and then not have a job and have to go coach at some Mo Valley school in the middle of nowhere. Or get $9 mil over the next 10 years and get to live in Omaha. Omaha is a lot better city than most college towns, eventhough it is in Nebraska.

Re: The program would get worse
We might lose some more games next year, but so what? We were already a lock for 12th place. Now we have long term hope. Next year might be bad, but I bet 2011-12 is a better year than the one before it.

Re: The program would get worse
I don't see how this affects negatively on ISU. Most people who have ANY knowledge of college bb know that he was likely gone after this year anyway. Mac taking the Alford approach and getting out before he gets kicked out is not in any way a reflection on what "level" our program is at. One could also look at it as the fact that his record was not good enough for us, but was good enough for Creighton.

A coach that Doug Gottlieb pointed out had failed at ISU gets a big deal from Creighton. How is Creighton not the laughing stock in the deal?
Really, how does anyone really spin this from the Creighton side? 9 or 10 million dollars based on four losing seasons?

He's leaving because he proved he couldn't make it in a real conference. ISU didn't make him fail, Mac did.

Wanna bet that somebody on KXNO will pick up the thought, "McDermott leaving makes ISU the laughing stock of the country and makes it impossible for ISU to recruit a coach and players?" Better yet, some grubby, fat fingered, little sports columnist will seize this thought and write another SLAM article against Pollard and ISU. And you wonder why sports columnist and sports commentators feel free to rip ISU every chance they get.
What a crazy fanbase.

What a crazy fanbase. A small price to pay for a big day for ISU basketball.

Really, how does anyone really spin this from the Creighton side? 9 or 10 million dollars based on four losing seasons? The spin from the Creighton side is to only focus on his MVC record. That's about it.

Re: The program would get worse
To those that are saying that ISU is going to be in worse shape if McDermott leaves for Creighton - ISU Basketball is in a situation right now where it will probably HAVE to get worse, at least superficially on the surface, before it gets better. If and when we do get a really good coach in here, it's probably still going to be ugly for a year or two - but sometimes things have to be put back in order on the inside before it begins showing on the outside.
And while it's what everyone's going to want, I'm not sure we can expect a CPR-type of turnaround for MBB in year one. At least Chizik left CPR with some talent to work with. Whoever takes over MBB is likely dealing with the worst talent in the conference. Unfortunately it's probably going to take 2-3 years before we see any real results.

Just saying, this is tough to spin from a Creighton perspective.

It really depends on the coaching staff. We all saw that it wasn't too late in the game to get recruits based on McKnight and Godfrey.. so maybe the new staff can pull in some guys. Who knows?

Just saying, this is tough to spin from a Creighton perspective. I totally agree, I'm just guessing that's what CU AD will focus on.

Agreed - a quality new coach could surprise the hell out of us. But I'm a pessimist by nature - I anticipate that even with a quality coach it'll be a rough year or two until he gets himself established.
