Chris, I don't think the barley pops that you drank this weekend have wore off yet. No way are we stepping up to almost $2 million range right now. I would love to be proven wrong, but just don't see it

Plus, we really were getting GMac at a steal. Werent we paying LE something over a mil back in the day?

He had 1 year of success on his own here in eastern washington and 1 iffy year. He was always destined for bigger things while he was here in Spokane (Pullman).

On a similar note though regarding pay, what do you think we can afford to pay the next guy? Certainly that number is higher than we wouldve thought a few weeks ago when we were talking what'd happen if we fired GMac, since we've essentially had a $3mil swing in cash with no buyout to pay + an 800k check from Creighton. I don't think that we'll pay any basketball coach higher than we pay our football coach. Currently that is $1.05M near as I can tell. Rhoads signed for a $250k base with $700k in guaranteed secondary compensation in the first year. McDermott signed for a $225k base with $425k in guaranteed secondary compensation in the first year.
So $1M would probably be about the most we will pay for a basketball coach, but it will probably be more like $800k as Pollard has hired on the cheap thus far.

From what i can find, we paid LE over a mil (1.1 maybe?) but Dan McCarney didnt cross a million until we gave him a 175k raise in 06. Also seeing that McCarney was getting 625k before a raise in 03, so he was making just over half what our basketball coach was...

It was a miserable failure. We have to open up the checkbook and take a risk. If not we can resign ourselves to the fact that our basketball program will be on average sub .500 most years and in a special year we may get 17 or 18 wins max. -

Eustachy had just completed the two greatest single seasons in Cyclone history as well. McCarney had one bowl win, but still couldn't get enough people in the seats without a marketing-savvy AD. Both were probably getting paid what the market demanded for them. I just don't think ISU can pay market value for a lot of coaches. It may want to, but history says it can't. If we pay more, odds says that our next coach fails (let's face it, our history indicates this is likely) and then we potentially have an even bigger buyout than we did under McDermott. I don't think JP can put us in that situation even if he wanted to.
I still think $800k will probably be right around what they pay. I would think that a coach like Scott Sutton would come for that (probably even less than that). If we didn't have a football program, we might be paying $1.5M-$2M type salaries, but we do have a football program. We probably aren't going to be paying more for our basketball coach than our football coach right now.

Is this a joke? The Pac 10 has been one of the premiere conferences with the exception of last year.

Re: Virginia's Tony Bennett
Interesting on Tony Bennett - This thread hasn't been pulled yet....
But other threads on other coach speculation (won't fill in names for fear of getting pulled) have been pulled.
Chris - Are you trying to eliminate all the other candidates from discussion so we all pick Tony????????

I'm guessing merged.

Re: Virginia's Tony Bennett
I'm not pulling any threads. Please don't read into things like that.
For the record, I was just told by a source that Tony would not be interested in the Iowa State job.

Re: Virginia's Tony Bennett
Then point me out to all the merged threads on Dino went to.....
