ISU getting $800K, but they're not getting $800K
Since Nurse and Grayer both signed 2 year deals and ISU has already stated they will be paid no matter what ISU will probably only get about 1/2 of that $800K.
Nurse's salary was $130K/year...don't know what Grayer's was so I'll guess $100K...that's $460K...
So basically ISU is coming out $340K on top with the McD divorce...they basically got halved by McD because he hired 2 assistants 2 days prior to leaving...

The price of Greg leaving and not having to pay a buyout is the real bonus in this.

Without seeing the contracts, a lot of times you only have to pay the difference between what you would have paid and what their next job pays. With nurse saying he has 'several opportunities' including going back to the Energy, we will likely not be paying his full salary for those 2 years.
As for grayer, maybe he'd be open to a job in another capacity in our department. Or, maybe the next coach wants him, who knows.

Re: ISU getting $800K, but they're not getting $800K
If Nurse takes another job we will only have to pay the difference in pay, correct? I think if he doesn't get head coach he will head back to the Energy if something else doesn't come up.
I could see grayer sticking around for a public relations position in the athletic dept. if he isn't kept on as asst. coach.
Edit: Wow, ALarson, posted exact same thing I was thinking... beat me by a minute.

Amen brother...as far as financials go, it really couldn't have worked out much better.
The timing on the other hand...

Grayer wants to earn that paycheck. I hope he gets the opportunity.

Gotta remember, Otzenburger has a contract that would need paid out too. Not that he won't have a job soon somewhere, but I doubt Creighton will pay him as much as he's making now. Same with Rutter.
My prediction is that Grayer ends up as either an associate AD or Director of MBB Ops. Otz is rehired by ISU. Rutter goes to CU. Nurse back to the Energy. We end up using about $200k on buyouts not counting Grayer.

Re: ISU getting $800K, but they're not getting $800K
You're going to have these types of situations any time you change up your staff. That's part of the reason you have buyouts- to cover all the costs related to replacing your coach and staff. -
Re: ISU getting $800K, but they're not getting $800K
The timeline of everything comes into question here. As we all know a AD at another school has to take the call from the school calling about their coach. When did the Oregon AD call Creighton's AD? And is it possible that the Creighton AD called Mac prior to the whole hiring of Grayer and Nurse?
Not trying to be a conspiracy guy here, but signing 2 assistants and locking them into having the university pay out their contracts, and then leaving smells a little fishy to me. Especially when one guy is a friend of Mac's and the other a cyclone legend.
Again...just thinking out loud here on the timing of this whole thing. Someone with better knowledge of the timing can chime in.

Keep Grayer. I could care less about the others, but keep Grayer.

But you make some valid points. And I don't think it's a stretch that JP had wind of the possibility of Mac to CU prior to the signings.

Who is McDermott going to hire as assistants at Creighton. I assume Altman will take all his guys with him. Most of McD's contacts from UNI are elsewhere. If he is not taking along Oetz, Nurse and Grayer - then who else.

Re: ISU getting $800K, but they're not getting $800K
I would put good money that neither Grayer or Nurse has a signed contract yet. Matter of fact the owner of the Energy said as much the interview he gave the rag a few days ago. Something along the lines of 'he's our coach until he signs with someone else'. Basically saying 'Nurse never signed a deal with ISU and so he can still come back no problem'.

Timing still sucks.
