Re: Reasons
1. Smart dude, been good at everything he has ever done
2. Played in the NBA, has been around bball all his life, it's not like coaching is rocket science, Freddie will figure it out
3. Probably his dream job, big advantage there.
4. He is young and has dealt with NBA players so hopefully that is not an issue.
5. It's Freddie, can't not like him, bring some excitement back
6. He will get as much time as ISU can possibly give him, ISU needs stability desperately.

His title is head basketball coach
He has never recruited a single athlete
He has never managed players egos
He has never motivated a team to play better
He has never developed relationships with HS coaches
He has never benched a player, or disciplined a player, or served as friend/mentor/confidant/motivator/teacher to a player
In short - he has never...
I completely support Freddy as our HC - but JP is hanging it WAY out.

5)He drives a buick So all of your reasons are no coaching experience...hmmm...can't follow rules but expect others to do so with their posts.
Go back down to the basement at your dad's house.

Re: Reasons
He has never called a timeout
He has never gotten in a refs face
He has never managed/stroked donors
Hes never faced any coaches that are on our schedule

Re: Reasons
1- Very smart, should be able to get/teach the X's & O's.
2- Born leader. If you've known him or been around him, you'll agree.
3- Should be able to recruit very well in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin. HS coaches will know him very well and he should be able to build credibility.
4- True Cyclone. Similar in nature, but to a greater extent, than Paul Rhoads.
5-Players will trust and respect him. Again, if you've been around him, you'll agree.
6- NBA ties. This will add credibility in most aspects of coaching.

Re: Reasons
I will say that I agree that lack of head coaching experience is a big deal. I don't dispute that at all. I think that some people however need to learn to think out of the box and not write off a guy that has spent his entire life (professional and otherwise) with the game of basketball.

Remember that at one time, the same could be said for Tom Izzo, Coach K, et al

We've just hired a new head basketball coach. Some people are understandably a little concerned. Excluding a lack of coach experience as a reason to be concerned about a newly hired head coach is laughable.

The original poster asked us to exclude obviously important factors in our 5 reasons, I simply did the same.

I really want this to work out for our sake and Freddy's....

I really want this to work out for our sake and Freddy's.... More like a '79 Camaro in Detroit.

Re: Reasons
1. who outside of ames has heard of fred hoiberg
2. what hs player knows what he did at isu
3. what is he going to sell a recruit on? "i developed_____________"nobody
4. he is keeping an asst from mcdoofus staff-why??!!
5. bcg wanted the job-and we hired the mayor instead???
this will not unify the fan base. i am 30 years old, and all of my cyclone friends are ****** about this hire. i'm sure it appeals to the over 40 crowd, but not us younger clones. i think pollard just showed himself the door. we will sell tix next year for sure, but after that, bye bye cyclone basketball.

Re: Reasons
any word on FH's contract? JP can't be paying him much....... i'm thinking money had to be the number one issue when hiring FH.
There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams
