Not from a coaching perspective. Fred needs a strong X and O guy by him. I think he can learn on the fly, but I liken this to Chizik, it is almost learning on the job. I think it is easier to do in basketball. However, at least Chizik came in with some strong credentials. Hoiberg has roughly half a year as an assistant at Minny.
While I think this is a major gamble, Fred and Jamie are both intelligent people. They realize they will need an X and O's guy.
Also, Fred Hoiberg steps in to a recruits living room, and the Mom's will be in love from the word, "Hello". Period.

Yes, from a coaching perspective. Kids playing NBA Live in their basement would be an improvement from a coaching perspective.

X's and O's probably not, but recruiting I would hope is a huge upgrade.

If for nothing else as in this situation, change was needed. The fan base, and evidently the players, needed something to rally around and end the madness which was the GMAC era. It just didn't work. Fred provides a fresh start and instantly has star power for ISU fans and players.

Who really cares what the "experts" and press think? You can speculate all you want about the cons of his lack of coaching experience. If you recall, Johnny didn't really coach X's and O's that much...Halihan did. Get yourself some great assistants and it makes you look like a genius. Fred is no dummy either.

Now, we can get excited again to watch and talk basketball...hopefully without all of the bickering. Well, at least until December.

Instead of a season already-lost, we'll likely break the season-ticket record, and maybe even sell out our first exhibition game (in actual attendance, even).

Upgrade? Does it matter? Greg went for job security and money. He made his choice. JP just made his choice. Now Fred is choosing. Magic is Back.

We now will have players that want to stay more than two years. Hamm jettisoned too quickly.

Do you think we now can out recruit Creighton?

I'm going to vote "probably"...But to qualify that, I don't think he is a "coaching" upgrade. I think we will be an upgrade in player relations and team building. Of course, none of this is a known quantity. We really have no idea what we are getting here.

Since when are player relations and team building not the responsibilty of a head coach?
