Wasnt Butlers head coach an accountant before a coach?
and wasnt Tom Herman a non coach before he took over offensive cord duties at Rice? You can have experience in several different ways. The NFL always hires recycled coaches and I think its stupid... Now hireing someone who is taking a step up isnt hiring a recycled coach, but BG would have been a recycled coach... I love the hire.

True, but to be fair he didn't go straight to head coach.

He put in the years and gained coaching experience before he was hired by anyone to be their head coach. C'mon fellas, keep up.

Experience can be acquired. Intelligence is inherited.

Well Fred gets to start out a little higher because we are Iowa State and arent winning a national title anytime soon. Our best option is to shoot for a star, not hire a recycled coach that will make us average.. Fred has way hire upside then anyone else would have. plus we are already at the bottom, cant get worse.

I personally think "experience" is often over rated...but I do think some experience is important before you get a top tier job.
Hoiberg has never been a coach at any level...what if after a year or two he decides it (coaching/recruiting) really wasn't what he expected and that he really doesn't like it (coaching/recruiting) as much as he thought he would even though he is coaching the Cyclones in Ames, IA...then what?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

Then we hire someone else... same as we did after orr retired, after floyd left us out to dry, after larry got fired, after wayne got fired, and after greg got fired/left.

Just the use of timeouts was atrocious. We used them after the game was lost. We used the press after the game was lost. What halftime adjustments. What great starts to games? What timeout plays? You want road wins? Yeah, so do we. You want to take off your jacket and take a T after the game is lost?
Yep, sometimes it takes more than experience. It also takes Nowledge just like at Nebraska. Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

How do you get out of bed in the morning? Life if full of risk. Living life in a bubble may be safe, but it is also pretty boring.
There are no guarantees in life, but it is better to try and fail then to never take a chance.

It's not that simple...because as tough as it is to imagine, we'd be in an even worse situation then - compared to now.

Fred has no bad habits and baggage dragging along behind him. It is a NEW day in ISU Basketball. It will be fun watching his system take shape and how he will approach the game from a coaching prospective.

I think it's an interesting hire for ISU. It will bring back excitement (at least for a while) and it could turn out to work really well in the long run. It's important that he surrounds himself with some experience because a lot has changed in the college game over the past decade.
For those of you saying experience is overrated, I think you need to take a look at the coaches who continue to win year in and year out. They are coaches who have experience and experienced staffs.
Worst case scenario this turns out just like the Clyde Drexler experiment. -

You don't know me at all...and guess what, I would venture a guess that I take a lot more risk every day than most of the people on this board. Do you work for yourself...or do you work for 'the man'?
I absolutely know there are no guarantees but to deny any concerns or reservations over hiring a guy that has zero coaching/recruiting experience is just foolish.
