coaching experience
I believe the coaching experience thing is overrated in a lot of ways. Knowledge of the game and being able to motivate players are the most important things (after recruiting). I have a feeling Hoiberg has the ability to teach and motivate, recruiting will be the real test. If he can get the right players, I think ISU will be very competitive in the near future.

Re: coaching experience
Got to start somewhere. Why not as place that loves you? I think Freddy has been around basketball long enough to have caught on to some tricks of the trade by now.
Let us pretend that he is a huge success that puts ISU on the map forever. We will have him for 35-40 years. This is my vision. Trophies. Lots of them.

Re: coaching experience
Played under Johnny Orr, Tim Floyd, Larry Brown, Tim Floyd, and Flip Saunders. All good coaches. Add to the fact that Hoiberg is a leader and smart and I could care less about the fact that he hasn't coached before

Re: coaching experience
Freddy has tons of basketball knowledge, he will get the job done, just like any business surround yourself with great people and you will also be great!!

Re: coaching experience
Ignore for a moment his name is Fred Hoiberg (aka, The Mayor). Same exact resume, the names and school locations are blank.
So looking at that anonymous resume, you still think this is the right decision as a head coach?

We are most likely going to bad next year anyway..its a great oppurtunity for him to learn on the go.

Re: coaching experience
I have heard a lot of people talk about McD's sets being too complex and actually handcuffing the players that know how to make things happen. Maybe having a coach come in without that foundation can be a good thing. Go out, get some good talent and let them play.

So looking at that anonymous resume, you still think this is the right decision as a head coach? While I completely understand where you are coming from, you are forgetting that being Fred Hoiberg is part of the appeal, as opposed to another unnamed inexperienced coach.
He knows what he loved about Ames and can use that on recruits, he understands what the fans expect, and Hilton magic and how to bring it back.
I agree on the inexperienced part, but you can't look at it like you are doing.

Why is Fred deserving and the much beloved, has coaching experience and already on staff TJ not?
Tons of people here wanted TJ retained but not as a HC because of? Lack of experience! But now that we hired The Mayor, the desire for experience has gone out the window.

Re: coaching experience
Honest reply....I like Fred's NBA experience over TJ.

I think, as another poster mentioned in the other thread you were posting the same thing in, that his Timberwolves experience and couple of months as an NBA assistant under Dwane Casey is what did it. Plus, I think we've seen that your assistants can do part of the job, like get recruits (no recruits said they wanted to follow Mac, but only cared about TJ), but the head coach has to be the figurehead and run the different parts of the show.. I'm guessing his NBA management experience qualified him on that.
I really won't claim to know, I'm just trying to look at it from JP's perspective.

So looking at that anonymous resume, you still think this is the right decision as a head coach? This is the number one point that people are missing. Instead, people are of the opinion "It's Fred Hoiberg - he can't possibly fail!"

I would counter that the fact that Otz is a representation of G-Mac's regime, a regime that many were unhappy with, was as big, if not a bigger reason why fans weren't thrilled about the prospect of him being named coach.
