I don't see the desperation in this hire. Not at all.
There was no reason for Jamie to rush. It's not like he was competing with any other school for a head coach. It's pretty clear he knew what he wanted, and went after it.
Pollard has had to make three hires. 1. McDermott. While it didn't work, don't forget, Greg was a hot commodity at the time. He turned down the K-State job so he could take Iowa State. Forcing the Wildcats to go with option B, which was a guy named Huggy Bear. It didn't work out in Ames. But it was roundly applauded at the time of the hire.
2. Gene Chizik. Chizik is a hell of a coach. He'll win at Auburn. He would have won in Ames. His players will win for the new guy. But seriously, you would turn down Auburn to stay in Ames?
And 3. Paul Rhoads. A terrific hire. Not a big name. But a proven record as a coordinator. Pitt. Auburn.
A local kid, grew up less than a half hour from Ames. Is passionate about Iowa State. And had a really good first year. 7 wins including the bowl game. Easily could have had nine wins. (KU and KSU).
So we now have hire #4. I'll give Pollard the benefit of the doubt.
