Re: U of Minnesota looking for bb players as well

    LOUD NOISES!!!!
Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

He was hired on Monday and press conference Tuesday. He had some business to finish with the Wolves then vowed to come in and hit the ground running. From the way I read and listened to his comments last week I wasn't expecting him to be able to really get going with his new job til this week.

Phone calls take a few minutes. Signing a paper only takes a few seconds. The longest part of this should be the trip to Ames, which isn't really necessary. Given the speed of the electronic age, he should be able to have 4 more guys signed by Friday.

Maybe a better question, is when would it be appropriate, in your opinion, to question what FH does? After 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, 10 years, never?
Wesley was a fluke who grew 5 inches in a year and wasn't highly sought after as a guard. How is a player who bolts once his potential is realized a great recruit? I think your AAU comment is above cocky and don't think you'll ever be considered a bench coaching prospect with that attitude. Get a clue and at least a sense of reality.

Sounds like you need to market yourself better then. Unless you make $800k/year posting on message boards.

My post was clear...I am pointing out that hiring Fred "The Mayor" Hoiberg does not magically equate to recruits instantly lining up at the door...even with this tremendous list of contacts he has. You need to read some of the posts that believe this is a can't fail hire...they insinuate that this could happen. I am not chiding FH or what he is doing...I am chiding those that are cult-like in their support of a new coach that has never coached at any level of the sport.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

This isn't your run of the mill job...this is a HC in CBB. I've heard stories of guys getting hired, holding the presser and then immediately getting on a plane to go recruit a guy or meet with a potential assistant.

Fluke or not...he (WJ) was available very late and on short notice...you never know what might be out there. And the fact he left ISU is irrelevant to the fact that he was the best player GM ever brought into ISU.

My comment about doing some coaching is not cocky at all...it was a smartass comment in response to a smartass comment towards me. By the way, I am not interested in being a bench coach anywhere...couldn't take the pay cut.

Lastly, I have both a clue and a sense of reality. The reality is that we have hired a coach with absolutely no prior experience coaching on any level. The reality is that there have been very few coaches hired in this fashion and none that have had success being hired in this fashion. I think most of us have always thought coaching was more of a who you know than what you know business (even more so than other businesses) and this hire is clearly strong evidence of that.

As I have said, I hope FH is able to lead us to unprecedented heights in our MBB program and I believe it is possible...I just don't believe it is a no-lose, win-win, can't-miss situation like so many on this site seem to believe.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I am just responding to the posters that are saying things like "I didn't expect him to really be on the job for a week or so because he had to wrap things up in MN". That may be how it works for many run of the mill jobs...but not this sort of gig.

but you're giving FH zero credit for keeping a key assistant, keeping a 5 player recruiting class intact, probably doing dozens of phone calls to fill out his staff, as well as hosting recruits on campus....and he's not hitting the ground running in your opinion. there are also ncaa rules regarding contact periods - there's only so much he can do, i mean, he was hired a week ago.

Frankly, keeping a supposed key assistant and this recruiting class together does not warrant any attaboys...at least at this point in time...in my opinion.

Personally, I would have preferred a total clean break from the prior coach instead of promoting one of his assistants. And the week before GM left we were reading about how weak our recruiting class was and now we are supposed to believe it is some saving miracle that this class has been kept "intact"?

Again, I never said he wasn't hitting the ground running. I don't know.

I'm betting that they're all committed and signed at this point. It's pretty slim pickins out there right now. IMO they have a team that should be competitive most nights. Maybe not against the big boys in conference, but most other teams. Might as well start looking at 2011. That's where FH's contacts should help. Right now, it seems like he is depending on TJ's contacts to fill out 2010.

I'd like to be excluded from that "we" as I never read that nor felt that way.

And yeah... keeping it in tact is kinda important in my opinion. How many players out there are there that are better than the guys we got? And how many of those better players do you think we'd be able to bring in?

We're going to win a lot more games with the recruits brought in than we would with a 5 man roster. And next year... you think it'd be easy to bring in new recruits to a team who won 5 games the prior year.

We need to do something this year to show to any recruits for the future. I think a lot of future guards will like the idea of getting to play with Ejim and our 3 Bigs... rather than being told... "hey... you're my first recruit and I'm going to build an entire team around you with some freshmen and jucos"
This is my sarcasm pirate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
