Thanks for the info...I knew he was having great success...what year was it that he beat Michigan State (or maybe it was Michigan)?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Not sure, I just happened to be rolling through DSM on my way out West and stopped in to see my sister and niece as they were at a basketball camp in Ankeny/Johnston. Julo was running the girls basketball camp. This was over five years ago. He had a noticible limp and looked like he was having some issues. I think it was his hip that needed replacing?? Or he had some foot issues. They guy could barley walk.

I know Hurl didn't start much. I thought Hamilton was a big disappointment. FReshman of the year in the Valley at Bradley. I thought ISU was getting a pretty good player. turned out not to be that good.

Ric was a great guy...a very accomodating guy that helped me out a bunch while a was a student with some duties I had for the athletic department.

He was an assistant at Lamar in Beaumont, TX for a while in the 90s and now he is at a small school in Michigan...I think he is having tremendous success there...if I recall correctly, his team actually beat Michigan State in the non-conference season a few years back.

At any rate, I always wondered why a guy like that never seemed to get a chance at a decent school as the head coach?
Maybe he doesn't want to deal with the pressure.

I saw him in 04 when I played a town league game in Harlan- he had braces on both knees and could still shoot- had a limp, though.

I am proud to say I actually appeared in a couple of segments of the Johnny Orr show back in the day. I was in charge of the ushering and concessions at Hilton, so they (channel 5) did a couple of segments about those things and included them on a couple of shows. I got to work with Johnny and his staff the first few years they were at Hilton, until I left for a new job in L.A. Great man!

So do you have any good stories about Johnny since you were around there so much?

A teacher at Tri-Center...assistant bball coach there too.

True story, I was in a class where he was the teacher...started walking away to go to the bathroom...Julo yells "Where da hell you think you going?" I said i'm going to take a wizz...he says "Next time say please ok?" I said sure...he then says "Sit your *** back down since you can't say please anymore...*mumbled under his breath* *******"...it turned into quite an argument....at first he scared the crap outta me since that was the first time he talked the entire day..

I got sweet revenge though...scoring 20 against his team sophomore year..hearing him yelling the guys to double team me was pretty funny.

LOL Not many I could (or would) tell. Let's just say he loved telling jokes and stories, and once he knew you he was not afraid to use a little salty language. But, despite that, understand that our contact was pretty much on a professional level. He didn't like to talk that much about himself.....I think he got a lot of that whenever he had to talk to the media.....they would always want the stories. What I thought was really great about him was that he was truly interested in other people....no matter what you did. I was pretty young at the time (in my mid to late 20's) and he loved to hear about my small hometown in Iowa, and my dad's farm.....stuff like that. Very easy going guy. I will say that the way you see with him on tv, or on tape, or whatever is the same way he was in person.

I watched parts of quite a few of his practices. There was no b.s. going on in them. He was there to work, and the players better be there to work too. I don't remember who, but I do remember him sending some players out of practice and telling them not to come back until they were ready to work.

Great guy. It is hard to describe the change in attitude that he brought to ISU Men's basetball at that time. ISU had taken a huge step when it opened Hilton, and hired Maury John, who was one of the "hot" coaches at the time. Then unfortunately when he got sick, the program took a couple of big steps backwards with Trickey (never trusted him) and Lynn Nance (total bore). When Johnny came on the scene......he just lit the place up.....and people in Iowa I think just really appreciated his good ol' boy style. Plus, he was a hell of a coach. He didn't always win, but his teams always played hard, and the basketball was incredibly entertaining to watch.

I hope they do something soon to honor him. I really want to see something done before he is no longer with us.

One of the guys from that team was my TA in African American Studies in the late 90s, early 00s. I want to say Hamilton but I don't think that's right. Anyone else?

Thanks for the insight. I met Johnny a couple times, but never got to observe him on a regular basis like you did.

A great man and I appreciate that more the longer time goes on.
