The last part of this quote tells me that we better hope FH is able to land a very good coach that doesn't mind not being "the man" in the program.
Make no mistake, Fred Hoiberg will be the man who runs the program. Being a leader doesn't mean you do everything, and a confident leader is more than happy to surround himself with really good people and to give them authority.

I was going to say that I bet steak, pork loin, and hamburger were about the same price as they are now. Food prices are incredibly cheap.

Exactly, Hallihan pretty much ran every practice in the Orr era, nothing new here.

In football CPR doesn't run the offense and defense and that works out ok for us so far, I don't see why it wouldn't work in basketball. Fred has a system and wants to find the guys to run it, and from the sounds of it just about has that taken care of.

Listen, I have been around some coaches. Frankly, it varies as to how a coach runs their program...there is no set formula.

My point is simple...we currently have a coaching staff with no one on it that really has any experience in putting a gameplan together or running a practice. This is extremely rare.

Most head coaches don't do everything...but they have done everything at some point in their career as they worked their way up. We don't have that situation with FH.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Gas was still under a dollar at times when I was in college from 94-98.

Football is a totally different animal...really no analogy to be made.

I am enthused that the Mayor will have a very good staff. I think we will be pleased.

I turned 16 in 97 and I remember paying .75 a gallon. Not for long but I remember under a dollar a gallon for a while. And I would know, I drove a '77 cutlass with a 350 and bought about 15 gallons a week of gas.

I get a little nervous with soooo many people discounting actual coaching experience. I'm all-in but to think CFH is the answer out of the box because he contains the exact same traits as many other people we know who may and may NOT have been successful at career changes is still a little naive.

Change is good. And watching growth is fun with patience. But when one argues the guy that runs practices is the most important guy, and another says they recruiting guy, and another says the HC who has honed his coaching chops through osmosis is the most important guy... I'm confused. If winning via the skills of CFH were that easy, at least 1 more team would have done it.

I'n not a "wait-and-see" guy. CFH starts with a perfect 100 then will get graded down over the course of his career. I hope its a long one for everybody's sake.

This bothers me a little too. I am sure Jeff is a great guy, but he has very limited coaching experience and with FH having none, the team doesn't need another guy learning the ropes.

It almost seems like FH would rather not have Grayer on his staff, but was forced into the situation because GMac had hire Jeff and JP and Fred did not want to dump on Jeff. Hopefully they can find something he can do to help the team. From the interview it does not sound like he will be one of the assistant coaches.

They are all critical components of success, but the man that assembles and leads the group is where it starts and ends.

Re: Hoiberg: "Pieces starting to fall into place"

My favorite part of that article was this quote:

Hoiberg is still on the prowl. There are 10 scholarship players on the roster. That’s three below the NCAA maximum.

“We have scholarships left, but I’m not going to use them just to use them,” Hoiberg said. “I look at scholarships like (salary) cap room in the NBA. Do you use it just because you have it? You use it for the right person.

That to me was a problem under McDermott - he used those schollies and then found out someone couldnt play....i would rather bank it and move ahead knowing you have schollies for 2011 or sign jucos so those schollies are open for the ultra talented 2012 class.

I think Orr got some pretty sweet pay upgrades as he went along ... but the initial base salary is an eye-opener in the current context.
And Johnny came here because we made him one of the highest paid coaches in the country.
