Fred was a much, much better athlete. He was quick and could take someone off the dribble and dunk it.

It's the only thing I could do because it was a hell of a lot easier than driving inside and getting rejected everytime.
He was a role player basically, which fit perfectly into McDermott's "shoot 35 three pointers per game and hope we make at least 40% to win" scheme. Awesome HORSE player though I'll bet...

Lucca had about 20 lbs of quitter wrapped around each ankle that hurt his verticle.

That's because Floyd demanded that Michalik take the ball to the basket, and thereby get to the FT line.
If you remember, Michalik, under Orr, was strictly an outside shooter, because, like Lucca, he didn't like contact. Floyd changed his game in a hurry.
As I've said previously, I would have loved to have seen Lucca at a Tim Floyd practice. It would have been priceless.

I remember watching the T-Wolves play at L.A. and Hoiberg took it to the rack when Shaq was inside. Freddy got fouled hard but wasn't afraid to drive. That's what I loved about Hoiberg, he could do both......and I loved his one handed, Dr. J dunks too!

Re: Something still bugs me about Lucca
Lucca- big recruiting mistake. If that guy is a pro player ANYWHERE, I'm thinking of making a comeback and I'm 61. Are PED's getting good enough that they can restore agility, quickness, stamina, etc.? If so, I got a good shot.

With his height (6-foot 5), why did Lucca have a total inability to score inside? He has the same height as Fred Hoiberg, and although Freddy was also known as pretty good 3-point shooter, Freddy could take the ball to the hoop as well as anyone else on the team when he was playing for ISU.
This just bugs me because I see other teams with players shorter than 6-foot 5, who can consistently score inside, yet Lucca being gifted with enough height to be an inside scorer chose to avoid going anywhere near the rim like it was the source of a contagious disease or something.
He could have been a much more valuable player if he had been willing to take the ball and score inside, at least occasionally. Opponents would leave lanes open for him to drive to the hoop, knowing full well that he would NEVER do it. Or, to turn it around, just imagine how much less of a player Fred Hoiberg would have been had he been totally unwilling to score inside like Lucca. The 100 play set had no Lucca posting up... Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

That's the worst thing about it — Take a player who can shoot in the 78 percent neighborhood at the line. He played less than two full seasons. Imagine 75 percent with 70 attempts (which is still less than 2 attempts per game). That's 52 points vs. 18.
Drive to the basket three more times per game and get fouled on a shot (plus, the added impact of having an extra dimension, which might free up your main asset, long-range shooting.
