Help me understand
I was under the impression that we retained Otz to keep some continuity with the players still at ISU; however, now I see that we're losing Dendy AND Oliver? I'm not counting Boozer in this query, because I think his problems aren't necessarily related to this current round of transfers.
Now don't get me wrong: I believe in having as much continuity as possible, but considering that we're only three players away from Absolute Zero Continuity, the decision to retain Otz as the head assistant seems like a bit of a head-scratcher.
Well, anyway, whatever I think about this decision, I also think that Coach Hoiberg deserves a chance to show us his chops on the bench. I'm still positive about the long term outlook for ISU MBB right now, but I just wish we had done a little better job of removing ALL the old McDermott influences on the program.
Hell, maybe we should try having the athletic department purchase Mac's old house in Ames and burn it to the ground & salt the earth from which it came, just to make sure he doesn't come back again. -

Rumors are Dendy is grades and Oliver is a medical condition.

Re: Help me understand
I thought we retained him because of his recruiting ability, and to keep the guys like Ejim and Philips from going elsewhere. Could be wrong.

Otz can recruit very very very very very well.

Recruiting without retention gives you.........the last 4 years of ISU MBB.

It should be the head coach's job to keep them here. That's where McD fell short. Apparently he was just not fun to play for. If we hadn't kept TJ on staff, not only we would be looking at these players leaving, but we would likely have lost several recruits, if not all of them, for next season

Re: Help me understand
That's what I'm afraid of.
I'm happy to retain Otz for the immediate future but player attrition occurred while he was here, with guys he recruited. Is it possible it was ALL McDermott's fault? Well, sure, but I kind-of wish we'd have had an entirely clean slate with an entirely new staff at the same time.
We'll see how it works out.

Boozer - Legal problems...my guess is the legal problems would have still occurred under the past coach.
Oliver - Potential medical issue.
Dendy - Flakiest guy to play for ISU since Chris Alexander with the decision making ability that doesn't exactly impress.
So, what attrition did you expect the coaching change to cure in less than 1.5 months?

So, what attrition did you expect the coaching change to cure in less than 1.5 months? Exactly. Hell, aside from boozer leaving, the other 2 werent surprises even when GMac was here (oliver's situation was rumored before, and dendy had issues all through the season) , and the boozer situation likely wouldve happened either way.
Now, if attrition starts to be a pattern with Hoiberg's players like it did with GMac's, we'll have problems, but so far, none of the losses we've had since hoiberg came change my opinion of hoiberg.

Coach Otz is the continuity. Under Coach Mac, ISU put two guys on to NBA rosters - Mike Taylor and soon Craig Brackins. Both were recruited by Coach Otz. Coach Hoiberg can sell his connections and Otz can sell his track record of putting kids in the NBA.
