Gem From the Omaha World Herald......

And then there is this gem in today's OWH from Brad Dickson's column:

New Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg was once offered a scholarship to play football at Nebraska. This is a great recruiting tool for the Huskers. “Turn us down and one day you could end up coaching at Iowa State.”

Turn us down and one day you could end up coaching at Iowa State where you will kick Nebraska's ***.

Turn down Nebraska, and you may actually win an NCAA game and have a 10 year NBA career.

Yeah......they should stick to football. Their basketball program has been a joke for their entire existence. I can't even think of a player from NU that has had as much success as FH. Also, they should know we swept them in the major sports last year. I guess I would save the trash talking for when they beat us.

The guy used to write for Jay Leno. What do you expect? He's used to picking out misprints in local newspapers and calling it comedy. HI-LARIOUS, Brad Dickson!

Don't want to get in an argument but during the 90's they were not bad. And they do have 22 post season appearances (6 in the NCAA).

Yes, and during Joe Cipriano's tenure at Nebraska, the Huskers went 20-5 in 1966-67 and 22-8 in 1977-78. Nebraska had consistently competitive teams prior to Cipriano's death from cancer. They never won a Big 8 championship (as I recall), but they on numerous occasions were among the better teams in the conference.

Yes, I know I'm living in the past again, but so are Iowa State fans when they talk about Hilton Magic, NCAA tournaments, Fred Hoiberg, etc. We all do it!

except ISU won an NCAA tourny game as little as 5 years ago, and nebraska has never done that.

ISU fans are no longer living in the past when they are talking about Fred Hoiberg. Just sayin.

If Fred would have taken that scholarship he'd probably be sharing a cell with Thunder Collins.

I think our definitions of "the past" differ slightly.

And how might that be, Geronimus? I still hear Cyclone fans talk about Hilton Magic like it was yesterday. When McDermott wasn't getting the job done, I heard Iowa State fans infer that it was just yesterday that Iowa State was winning Big 12 tournament games and going on to the NCAA.

The bottom line is that neither school has had a history of great success in basketball. In spite of the fact that Iowa State fans can claim a measure of success more recently (during the Floyd and Eustachy eras), Nebraska fans can claim that overall, there may have been more success at Nebraska than at Iowa State. As I said Cipriano had some very good teams in Lincoln, and Moe Iba and Danny Nee both had some "dance" quality teams.

It's past whether it is Johnny Orr, Tim Floyd, Larry Esutashy, Joe Cipriano, Moe Iba or Danny Nee! Iowa State fans have just as much of an ability to live in the past as do Nebraska fans (or any other fan base, for that matter).
