There is still some conflicting information on him and until Hoiberg clears it up, I think there is still some doubt as to what exactly his title is. There is at least for me.

but i get what you're saying that fred hasn't come out and said something about Grayer's actual role.

Re: grayer
I think it's safe to say he's an assistant.

Re: grayer
I thought there were rumors that Fred mentioned possibly hiring 2 more assistant coaches while at one of the Cyclone outings earlier this month. This was before Lutz was announced, so that would leave to believe that he is looking to hire 1 more. Where does this leave Grayer?

Re: grayer
As I understand the NCAA allows each school to have 3 "official" assistant coaches. They are the only ones who can contact recruits and scout or recruit off campus. For us is that TJ, Grayer and Lutz?
At Iowa Ryan Bowen was just hired for the basketball staff as a video coordinator. That means he isn't one of the "real assistant coaches".
I'm curious whether Grayer or Lutz will both be one of the 3 official assistant coaches or will their position be a non-coaching spot such as Bowen. In that case we will still be hiring someone else.

Grayer, Lutz, and TJ are the three official be coaches. Rutter is DOBO. Per NCAA rules, only the coaches can coach during the game.
It is funny to read about Bowen, because EIU fans can't wait for him to start coaching. They can't seem to understand a Video Coordinator can't do any coaching at all.

Every time an interviewer presses Hoiberg for a definition of Grayer's position, he says it hasn't been sorted out yet. That tune hasn't changed. Until he does, I think there is still some question on his role. I think Hoiberg likes Grayer as a person, but would not have even thought about hiring him for his staff if McDermott didn't do it already. I don't take that as an indictment on Grayer, just what I perceive the situation to be.
