This is business. Contract? A signed contract? According to the newspaper story it was a verbal agreement. Nothing signed.

Re: ISU to pay Nurse 175K
I will take paying Nurse $175k to buy him out vs. 2 million to buy out McDermott if he had stayed. I am willing to bet had this gone to court, it would cost us a lot more than $175k, let alone the bad publicity we don't need.

If I'm Nurse I'm concerned with my reputation in the community. He's a very public figure. There are other communities other than Iowa State communities, e.g. University of Iowa community. I don't think his standing will suffer in that community -

From what I understood it sounded like it was only a verbal agreement. I'm ok with the reasoning, but to me paying someone 75% of their contract's value for less than a week of being employed seems insane.

In law, a contract is an agreement between two or more parties which, if it contains the elements of a valid legal agreement, is enforceable by law or by binding arbitration. That is to say, a contract is an exchange of promises with specific legal remedies for breach
As long as the good or service provided is legal, any oral agreement between two parties can constitute a binding legal contract. In daily life, most contracts can be and are made orally, such as purchasing a book or a sandwich

It is possible though.
