Iowa/Iowa State Men's Basketball Game
I've been thinking about it and...this year's game could be the ugliest game the series has ever seen. Both teams lost several key players from their rosters, and both teams return very few players of any significance. Both teams will be playing newcomers/freshmen in large quantities who don't have major D1 basketball experience. And, obviously, both teams will have a brand new coach who has implemented a new system the returning players must get used to.
This could seriously be a hideous game. I expect massive amounts of turnovers, and a pretty low scoring game. I always watch this game, but I think this year I will watch it more for my amusement than because I care about the outcome.

Actually I'm excited for this game. You have a no kidding "clean slate" for each school. This could actually be one of the most fun games to watch all season, in any sport.

Well, Iowa can say they return 4 of 5 starters... so I'm not sure things are so bleak for the Hawkeyes. 2 of these starters were freshman last season, so I would expect a bit of improvement.

There is no reason to think this will be anything but a fun game.

Both teams are better than either fanbase realizes...

I don't know about bleak, but just because Iowa returns starters from last season doesn't mean that they'll start this season.
Coach Fran is installing a completely new system and the guys recruited under Lick are not necessarily the type of players for the new system. It will be interesting to see it play out but I am excited and optimistic for Iowa Basketball for the first time in about 6 years.

It would probably be wise to avoid Iowa basketball for another year or two. The trainwreck isn't over yet.

Outside of Gatens none of Iowa's returning starters inspire much confidence.

At the end of the day the programs are starting from virtually the same place. While saying that I think the Iowa fanbase is in a far more fragile state then ISU's fanbase is. ISU is still in party mode from the exit of GMAC and the entrance of Fred Hoiberg. I don't think the hawk fans had quite the venom for Lick as ISU's had for GMAC.
