AMES, Iowa – Former Iowa State All-American Jeff Grayer has decided to return to Michigan to be closer to his family.
Grayer was originally hired to be an assistant men’s basketball coach by former head coach Greg McDermott last spring. When Fred Hoiberg was hired as head coach in April, he offered Grayer the opportunity to serve in an administrative capacity on his staff rather than as one of his three full-time assistants.
“Jeff wants to be able to recruit and be on the floor coaching the players,” Hoiberg said. “Unfortunately, NCAA rules only allow us to have three assistant coaches.”
Here's my question....why is this happening now? He has been on the coaching staff for three months now, maybe even a little bit more since he was originally hired by McD, and only now the limitations of his position are an issue, right at the start of the semester? I don't know, just doesn't feel right to me. I hope this means that Chris Allen is still firm with us. It seems like Grayer was a big reason why he came here in the first place.
Best of luck to Grayer. I hope he finds whatever it is he's looking for.
