I was just about to post this too! Amazing news for Iowa! Not only will southwest have low fares but it also forces all the other airlines at DSM to compete with southwest. Very excited for them to begin service and hopefully add some nonstops to places warm!
It'll be interesting to see what cities Southwest ends up having direct service from Des Moines. While you can get just about anywhere by connecting, there probably won't be a lot of options. I believe Southwest out of Omaha has direct flights to Denver, St. Louis, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Chicago-Midway, although you can connect to nearly anywhere from those cities. My guess is that they will probably provide something similar or smaller for DSM, at least initially. If the routes they begin with are successful (and there should be every expectation that they will be), they may add different connecting cities next year.
This might be good. As it stands I have to use American to get from Austin to Des Moines.
Right now Airtran only connects to Milwaukee so I hope SW opens it up more than that...
I've got six-figures of Southwest points from travel for work, and they were fun for vacations and all, but they were useless to take me home (outside of Omaha and talking somebody into driving five hours to come and pick me up).
Oh, and to note to something to Southwest doing mostly point-to-points service...
That is true, but they do have at least a little hub 'n' spoke going on out of:
(2) Chicago-Midway (that's how you name an airport, my friends...)
(5) Las Vegas--though that is more about pure volume of flight than "hub"
I would imagine that Southwest might continue the old line to Milwaukee. They might have a few flights a day to at least one or two of these (I would think Chicago definitely, maybe BWI, maybe Nashville, maybe Tampa, maybe Denver, and maybe even Vegas). They might surprise us, too, with some random stop to someplace like Detroit or SFO or something like that, too. But, hey, long as they'll put me through BWI or MDW on the way back 'n' forth between DSM and BDL, I'll be happy enough, since it's gotta be cheaper than Delta or United.
Awesome. Flying Denver to Omaha to come back for a game can now be direct to the Big DSM!! Can't wait.
