Iowa DOT Considering New License Plates
Re: Iowa DOT Considering New License Plates
That will happen...they are running out of numbers with this version.
Re: Iowa DOT Considering New License Plates
I don't see why they'd replace all the current plates at once. Makes no fiscal sense what-so-ever. Leave them in circulation and replace them as people replace the tags

Assuming that every number between 0-9 (10 possibilities) and every letter A-Z (26 possibilities) are available, there are 36 x 36 x 36 x 36 x 36 x 36 or 2,176,782,336 possible combinations of 6 digit plates.
This doesn't include the fact that vanity and specialty plates can be 7 or less entries.
I don't think they are running out of numbers.

With the 3 digit letters, they started in the A's and are in the X's currently, and I have noticed through the years the letters increase in order. Based off that, I'm assuming they are running out of options...

I forgot that the first three can only be numbers and the last three can only be letters.
10 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 x 26 = 17,576,000
So, a much more modest number. If they change the plate design though, how does that change the number of available plate numbers? They are going to reassign old plates too.
Re: Iowa DOT Considering New License Plates
Isnt it 3 letters then 3 numbers on non vanity plates? I think at that point itd be 10*10*10*26*26*26,
As for the costs, here's a way... halve the production cost by not requiring front plates.

THey're going to start using special characters too.
You could be the lucky person to get #($!@& for a license number!

It would probably clear out a lot of currently unused plates that were formerly used, for whatever reason.

It's funny though because the DOT doesn't use certain three-letter combos because they would form derogatory words. So that figure you came up with is somewhat inflated.

It's about ferkin' time for a new design. You can't really tell what the current design is unless you're right on top of it anyway.
I hear the Iowa Supreme Court is suggesting we one up Hawaii and go for the DOUBLE rainbow.

Gonna say - we just bought a car back in April and our plates were started with XBX - there CAN'T be too many left (plus they've had these for something like 15 years)
