    DIY water heater replacement ?

I am in need of a new water heater. I was wondering if this is something I should do it myself or hire it out. I am pretty handy and have plenty of tools to do it.

Are you a licensed plumber? If not, then hire it done. Water heaters are nothing to fool around with even if you are "pretty handy." I you insist DIYing the job, then get a licensed master plumber for you to consult with to do the job safely. Many in home disasters have been attributed to water heaters for all kinds of reasons.

Uhh, yeah. Get a licensed guy to do it. If you want to mess with hot water heaters...watch the Myth Busters episode about them. Essentially a rocket if you don't know what you're doing.

LOL did you even pay attention to the episode? They had to intentionally rig the water heater so the overflow wouldn't release the extra pressure. But that doesn't make your point any less valid. Get a plumber.

Re: DIY water heater replacement ?

FWIW: I've installed a few water heaters myself over the years (all natural gas, not electric) & have never had any issues. If you can solder copper pipes with confidence & connect nat gas black iron (use plenty of dope), it's actually quite easy. The owner's manual will have some install & safety guidelines. If you follow those, you will be just fine.

I have always put a combo carbon monoxide & nat gas detector near the water heater for a couple weeks to make sure everything is working correctly.

Keep this in mind, the only thing in your home that is more dangerous than the water heater is you...

If you can sweet copper pipes, flip breakers, and turn wrenches, you should be able to do it yourself and save a bunch of money. If its gas, use pipe dope and check for leaks after.

Should save you a few hundred dollars. Don't worry about it exploding. Its not like your building a water heater, or messing with the safety valves. Your just installing it.

Also, remember some cities (Ames for instance) require ALL new water heaters to be inspected within 24-48 hours of installation.

Not sure the penalty, but I like to follow the rules.
Very important lesson learned... NEVER pass up the opportunity to acquire a bottle of Templeton Rye... NEVER.
