The wind....

Anyone remember having a sustained wind like this for this amount of time? I don't, this is just insane! Anyone have any damage from it? My garbage cans are in the field somewhere and the gutters on my new house were ripped off last night. Its getting tiresome, I cant imagine having an ISU game the last two days.

Up here in the Twin Cities one of our weather guys was just beside himself that we had two separate wind gusts (Wed night, 60 mph; early Thur morning, 62 mph) over 60 mph that weren't associated with a severe thunderstorm. He was commenting that this was a very, very rare occurrence. I thought we had something similar about a year or two ago when we had ridiculous sustained winds that were blowing sand and dust so bad you felt like you were getting sandblasted.

We had a couple of large rollup doors damaged at my work. We would have had more damage but we cracked the rest of them to reduce the pressure.

what's so impressive is this wind storm stretches from Kansas/Nebraska all the way to Lake Michigan.

Just saw one of my neighbors bradford pear trees split in half. Course, they are pretty, but one of the worst trees you can plant in the midwest with our storms. We had trash day yesterday, let's just say, the aftermath isn't pretty. I don't think players or fans would enjoy a game with this wind.

At my place of employment over in Illinois, the roof is starting to blow off. It's aluminum and is loud as crap, with the wind blowing on a few loose pieces.

The doors on our metal shed have gotten blown off their track so now I am sure we have a shed full of leaves. It's been too windy to even attempt to put them back on.

Indeed, you're local wx man is correct. This was the strongest non-tropical low pressure system to ever hit the lower 48 states. See the link below. The low dropped to 955.2mb or 28.21" of Mercury. This is equivalent to a pressure associated with a Category 3 hurricane.

Now the big question is... 'What does this mean to me?'
Answer: Winds flow from High pressure to low pressure. The higher the high pressure and the lower the low pressure, the stronger the winds will be moving.

If you're wondering why the winds aren't as strong as a hurricane even though the pressure is similar... it has to do with friction. Over water, there is relatively no friction, so the winds are stronger. Over land, even relatively flat land, there is a lot more friction, hence the 'lower' winds. (Still 70mph wind gusts I believe in parts of Minnesota)

While forecasting the storm last weekend, I said that this was the strongest storm I have ever seen. And it ended up being the strongest storm I've ever seen.

From massive Tornadoes/Storms racing through parts of the Ohio River Valley through the deep south on Tuesday, to relentless winds through the heart of the country and Blizzards through parts of North Dakota and Northern Minnesota, this was truly an impressive sight.

This will be a storm people talk about for years to come.

Hope everyone didn't see much damage as a result from the winds. In my opinion, If I had to pick, I'd say we got the best part of the storm.

Now... What the hell was that kid thinking when he was up on the scissors lift filming the Notre Dame football practice. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!

As far as the Notre Dame kid, I put that on the football staff. They should have known better and not asked him to be up there filming. He might have been afraid of jeopardizing his position by saying no. Can you say "law suit"?
