Car Repair Help

I took my car down last week for service and repairs done, the car repair company did the diagnosis and said that front brakes were bad and nothing else and no trouble found on the suspension of the car so they replace the front brake pads and rotors....

Two days after the brake replacement, started hearing squealing noises and took my car in yesterday to have them look at it to see whats wrong......

Got a a call and they say that i need new shocks, if the shocks are part the suspension, how could the shocks be good last week and bad this week especially they look at everything last week....

Am I being rip off by the car repair company espcially a misdiagnosis when looked at last week...

Need more info from you. First of all shocks do not make a squealing noise (that is reserved for female U of I students.

Your new brakes may be the suspect of the squealing noise. New brake pads will make a noise similar to the noise when they need replaced and it will go away after minimal use.

Additional questions:

* When does the squealing noise occur (when brakes are applied or when going over bumpers in the road)? How fast are you going at the time the noise occurs?

* How many miles on the vehicle?

squealing noise happens right away when i applied brakes

Could actually be the new pads, if your car came with ceramic pads, and they used organic(asbestos) pads to replace them they are usually noisier than what came on the car from the factory, went through this with my wife's car, took back to shop and they replaced with original equipment pads and the noise went away. just my 2 cents...

The car repair company stated to fix the problem I could spend $140 to do something but they recommend I spend $500 to get everything fix

If you don't trust them take your car somewhere else and have them check into it.

I would concur with the others that it is probably just your new brake pads. Drive around a bit and listen for the noise. If it only happens when you apply your brakes, that is probably the culprit. I would be skeptical of the claim that you new shocks. I know from experience that some places in Ames will try to rip off college students. Be careful.

Tell them, thanks but no thanks. Your new break pads are making the sound you are hearing. You will know when your shocks are going bad.

Stand in front of your car, with your hands on the hood, start using your weight to get the front end bouncing up and down. Let off when you bottom out. If it rises once more and then stops, your shocks (or struts) are fine. You shouldn't hear any noise either. Do the same in the back. Like everyone else, I bet it's your new pads. The noise will go away once they mate to your rotors, assuming your rotors wern't turned.

the squeeling is in the brakes they replaced. Leave the shocks alone. IB
