John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
Today is a day to remember Mr. Lennon. BUT, do you suppose the assination of John Lennon had the same effect on my parents generation, as Kurt Cobain killing himself, to my generation?
I was just born when Lennon was shot, but I remember when/where and with whom I was with when the Cobain news came out.

I still remember sitting in an Iowa State computer lab when I heard the International Business Buildings in New York fell.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
I will never understand the fascination with Kurt Cobain.
There were other "grunge" bands and albums out before Nirvana. I guess he gets credit for bringing the "mainstream" into the grunge movement.
Smashing Pumpkins released Gish prior to Nevermind and I feel it is a superior album. Is the only reason Billy Corgan isn't worshipped is because he didn't blow his head off with a shotgun?
Nothing enhances talent like tragic death.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
Lennon's had a much greater effect.
First, I love both their music. But Lennon's death was much worse, as he was murdered in cold blood, and was a great voice for peace. Cobain was... well a messed up rock star who made great music. Rock Stars drink themselves to death, OD, die young, whatever. Lennon was murdered in cold blood by a deranged fan, much sadder.
Second, Lennon was so much more famous and beloved than Cobain that its hard to make that comparison. Everyone knew him and the Beatles.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
Cobain was a huge deal. I was in middle school and we were all pretty infactuated with Nirvana more than any other band.
I'm sure Lennon was a huge deal on an even greater scale.

Cobain killing himself had no effect on me or my friends when we heard the news, another drug addicted rock and roller dying is not that life altering.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
I became annoyed at how much more popular Nirvana got when he died.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
Lennon > Cobain
Lennon/McCartney single (double?)-handedly changed the course of rock and roll. Cobain was an early adopter of grunge.

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
Lennon was just a damn redcoat hippie
and cobain committed suicide for the exact reason his suicide caused ...kind of a catch 22 there

Re: John Lennon and Kurt Cobain
No question that Lennon's death was a bigger deal... speaking from a complete outsider's point of view (i was only 3 when Kurt Cobain killed himself). I'm a huge fan of both the beatles and Nirvana, but the fact is that Lennon was more popular, and more influential, than Cobain was. Both bands were revolutionary in what they did to music, but Lennon was more of an influential figure than kurt, and therefore his death probably had a greater effect.
But like I said, that's all an assumption since I'm too young to remember either death.
