Any advice would be much appreciated!
As long as you have the title, all you have to do is write up a bill of sale (get off of internet) and have both you and the buyer sign it. When I bought and sold a car by owner, that is all I did both time and the county courthouse accepted it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. What if the car is in my wifes name? Do I have a right to sell it?

You can still sell it as long as she signs the paperwork or to be on the safe side, just get a power of attorney to sell it yourself. This is what my wife did when I was deployed to sell my car and our home.

Also make sure you have something that says the car is sold "as is" and have them sign it so they don't come back with problems. My dad does this, and it comes up on The Peoples Court a lot!

Don't sign off the title until the check clears.

I'd go certified check, money order, or cash only.
Re: Selling a car by owner
Don't take a check, get cash. If they insist on a check go to their bank and do the deal
Re: Selling a car by owner
As I wrote that I took a check for the last 2 vehicles I sold.
Re: Selling a car by owner
Thanks for all the info, I'm mostly concerned about doing the paperwork correctly.

The link someone posted above has everything you need. I've sold 2 cars this way and have simply followed that link.
Re: Selling a car by owner
The "sold as is" piece plus something saying their is no implied warranty is important. When you sell a vehicle in Iowa there is a 30 day implied warranty unless something is signed stating no warranty, written or implied exists in the transaction.

The seller needs to sign the title to the buyer on the back of the document as well to make the sale final.

There is NO Implied warranty selling a product from one person to another unless the one person is a licensed dealer. IB
