Worst it has ever been.
And the people who mock SNL and say the cast sucks are usually the same folks who over-think movies/TV and believe the Matrix is real. Its entertainment, not a business meeting. Just enjoy it for what it is and have a good time. That's all life really is anyway.
I have tried watching the first season of SNL and it is no where near as good as the days of Sandler, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Spade, and Farley. Will Ferrell may be the best cast member they have ever had. I do not care for his movies, but he was solid gold when he was on the show. In the first season, outside of Belushi, was not good. I am sure it got better in year two, but season one was not very good.
Seth Meyers weekend update last night was him at the top of his game.
Seen him live in concert 8 times, so I'm not sagging off on him at all. It just wasn't as good as I'm used to hearing. Just glad he's still out there doing it. A living legend, nuff said.
The rest of the show didn't seem too special. Intro and Weekend Update were always the best and that still seems the case. check out the YouTube video of him being interviewed by Chris Farley in the 90's. That's hilarious!
While i still consider the will ferrel era the best, i gotta say these past couple have seasons have been catching up. i love andy samberg and bill hader. (and hader last night on weekend update was amazing.) and IMO kristen wiig is the most talented female theyve ever had on the show. (sorry tina fay fans.)
I haven't watched SNL on a regular basis for years. Last night I had been watching Channel 13 news and still had it on the same channel when it started. I thought the opening skit was funny. The monologue was predictable and lame, and I changed the channel when I saw the beginning of the first skit with the kissing family. I'd seen them do that skit before. I thought it was lame the first time I saw it, so I didn't want to see it again.
And I just have to say this--Kristen Wiig has to be one of the most overrated comedic actresses I've seen. She has three characters: Crazy old lady, shy quiet woman, and over-the-top diva. Every character I've seen her play on SNL or in movies is some variation of one of those three.
Bill Hader doing "Stefan" on Weekend Update talking about clubs in NYC to visit is absolutely hilarious. Seth Myers does a really good job too.
And I didn't count the intro, music guests, or weekend update in my "one or two" as you usually know what you're getting every week with those. There's not really that many skits in a given show.
Here is a time frame for the guys he listed.
Will Ferrell - 95-02
Adam Sandler 91-95
David Spade 90-96
Jimmy Fallon 98-04 (who by the way is my least favorite cast member of all time, he laughed through all of his skits)
Chris Farley 90-95
Chris Rock 90-93
Early to mid 90's is my favorite time frame for SNL. However I am one that has also enjoyed the early 00's and even the last couple of years. I love some of the cast members they have now (some of the guys on now are awesome) and i agree with an earlier poster that Kristen Wig may be the best female cast member ever.
If i had to pick my favorite male cast members it would be Phil Hartman (loved caveman lawyer), Will Ferrell, Al Franken, Darrell Hammond, and Tracy Morgan. There are others that I loved to but these are who I could think of right now.
I thought the first performance was painful, but it got better from there. I think this cast is OK, but is really hit or miss more than in the past. The skits are either hilarious or extremely painful to watch.
