I've been using AVG for quite some time and have had good luck with that. *knock on wood*
If you looking for something free check out Microsoft Security Essentials.

Avast! Antivirus is a solid free choice. I've tried AVG but found while scanning it bogged down my computer more.
I would go with security essentials free, easy to use and light. If I were to go with a paid one the best one out there is ESET Nod 32 hands down.
I've never used anything but McAfee, no reason, just what came on the cpu. Don't know if McAfee is a good program, or if there is something better out there. I will look into those suggestions so far!
For free, I highly recommend running the combo of AVG and Avast! Use AVG for full scan and if needed proper removal Run full scan 1x a week or so. Best for infected computer.
Avast! best freebee for prevention and is kinda the first line of defense (shield), but for the most part hope that what one doesn't get the other will. I use this combo on my non-work computers.
If you're paying. I'm curently using VIPRE. Great value (I think they are running a 2 yrs for the price of 1) if you don't need multiple licences. Using this one on the work laptop.
Also, make sure you download Malwarebytes and scan regularly for malware.
Thanks again!
I'd go with Avast or Avira.
Avast, in combination with Malwarebytes.
AVG Avast is coming out with 2011 edition soon. PC Magazine online has a great section this month rating anitvirus programs.
