Any ETL Experts Out There?.....

I have the opportunity to get some training on a new ETL tool for work and my 2 primary options are Informatica or DataStage.

For any of you who have worked with either of these tools, can you provide your input on which tool you would prefer to get trained on and why? That's ultimately what I need to decide in the upcoming weeks.

We use DataStage at work. For what ever reason they sent only the DBA to a training class so the rest of us have been left to our own to figure it out. If you are a stable guy at your work place I'd say take the training that lets you work with the people and projects you like. If you are like some of my friends, you might want look around the workforce and see which product lends itself to making you more appealing. As for the DS, great way to push and pull files between systems. Using it to created warehouses and datamarts in an automated fashion. A class would be great to hit those things that we don't know, I'd love to know how to make an XML output from a flat file input, that is what I am working on now.

Since I work in Informatica , my opinion is probably a little biased towards it. Informatica is more programmer friendly. Datastage generally needs more jobs than Informatica because it calls for landing data between transformations. Informatica is more easier to work with MPP databases (they offer loaders for TD,Greenplum, Neteeza etc) and also offers Application Connections to Hadoop among others. It is well positioned to enter into the MDM & Cloud Computing space.

Informatica is used more widely in the market. DataStage however is a growing tool and since being bought out by IBM a few years back, it is becoming a more popular tool.

Thanks for the feedback - both replies seem consistent with some of the other research I've done as well. It will be interesting to see how popular DataStage gets now that's under the IBM name. I'm guessing IBM will probably invest in the DataStage platform going forward as well, so maybe it will get more programmer friendly with future releases.

At this point, I don't really have any IT projects to apply this training to, it would be used primarily as a resume builder and to position me as an ETL resource for future projects.

We use Oracles warehouse builder. Informatica was a on the list we looked at.

It would be nice to learn some the Oracle tools as well, but unfortunately those aren't supported by my employer, so I don't even have the option (unless I wanted to pay for it myself of course).

Are either capable of generating TPS reports?
