I become a DirecTV customer today
Been with Dish for a few years but really wanted the whole house DVR. Also tired of Dish dispute with Disney -- how dare they expect my kids to watch Phineas & Ferb in standard def.
And last but not least, I didn't want to go through another football season where I had to watch three games on my laptop because Dish won't offer Fox College Sports.
Am I going to be happy with my choice?

Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
Have had direct since 1999, have never looked back. Start-up costs can be high with the extra "advanced" receivers, but it beats the $15 or $20 monthly rental fees for HD-DVR that cable companies charge.
Also, outside of Versus, I am not aware of channels going into dispute with contracts and being pulled off the air for months.

I hope so, I get mine installed on Saturday! -
Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
Most likely. Directv has the highest price but it also has the most content.
Hopefully you took advantage of loading your house up with DVR's. Once you sign that contract you'll be paying a lot more for them.

Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
I think it's great. Anybody I know also has switched. If your wanting to watch sports direct tv is way ahead of dish that is for sure. The only trouble I had was they really don't show there sports pack in anything I had to ask for it and the price. One great thing that save us alot of money is when someone is signing up for service that is friends of ours we do that referal deal and it knocks $ 10 off of our minthly cost and the person signing up for ten months.

One other thing make sure you hook your internet up to it. The video on demand is really good as well. We didn't do it right away but since then I have had it that way for a few months and I still haven't been able to see all it has to offer.

Last I knew, DirecTV only offered NFL RedZone to NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers. That would be a huge sticking point for me.

Question on that...Do you have to have ALL your boxes hooked up to the net to get the VOD services or just your main DVR box? Two of three are located near ethernet ports in my house and will be hooked up. The upstairs one I might have to install a wireless access point, if necessary.

This does suck, but I knew it going in and it's a sacrifice I'm prepared to make. Perhaps we could get a bunch of people together and deluge their customer service with emails asking them to include the RedZone channel with their sports pack.
I guess I kind of understand why they do it that way, though. I'm guessing a large percentage of people would opt for the RedZone channel over the Sunday Ticket and they'd probably lose money.

Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
The only issue I have with Dish is not carrying FCS. Not really sure why they don't offer it as part of their sports pack. I imagine Fox's going rate is too high for Dish to justify adding it. It's not in HD anyway and I'm at all the home games, so it just sucks for any away games.
Other than FCS and NFL Sunday Ticket, never understood the argument that DirecTV blows Dish away when it comes to sports.

Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
I just noticed cool feature on my directv box that is hooked up to the internet.
If you go to "smart search" and do a search the bottom result will actually search YouTube and you can watch the clip right on your TV.
As far as hooking it up to the internet, you may want to try powerline. I use one on one of my receivers that isn't close to an Ethernet connection.

Re: I become a DirecTV customer today
You don't have to have all of them hooked up to the internet. The receiver if hooked up does report back to the mothership any box issues or reception issues and it can trigger a service call before you realize you have an issue.

Am I going to be happy with my choice? I have been with Dish purely because of my location. I am holding out that the Big 12 will get a Big 12 Channel and Dish will end up picking it up like they did the Big 10 Channel. Then I will have no issues with Dish. I wouldn't pay for the NFL channel anyway so that doesn't bother me.
Besides, Dish has added an outdoors package which is nice. It is almost cafeteria style
