Re: Royals leading AL Central!!!!!!
Let the Royals fans enjoy the moment. I am totally sympathetic and am doing the same for my O's, while not thinking too much about how things will go even as far away as June. First place is first place!
Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving. -
Re: Royals leading AL Central!!!!!!
If you factor in the "we are the Royals" factor into the equation, we are already mathmatically out of it. -

They have the number 1 rated minor league system in all of baseball and it isn't even close. The Royals ownership is as committed to winning now as they ever have been and are doing a much better job. There are just so many fans that don't know anything that talk jibberish and end up looking like idiots.
Are the Royals going to win the central, no. But will they be competitive? Yes. And the cavalry is coming, and when it does watch out. The Royals have always been this committed to winning? Could've fooled me. They may be competitive but just about everybody, including SI, picked them to finish last in the AL and I bet they pay pretty close attention.

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this. -

Exactly. If the season was one month long, we'd be good.

Poor Royals. Even their fans don't have enough respect for them to put a thread about them in the Pro Sports section of the forum. Instead, they are relegated to the catch-all "off-topic" setion amongst discussions of "favorite beers" and Marty Terrill blowups. No respect. -

Not a huge baseball fan, but the Royals are the team I root for. I'm sure if they keep this up it will draw me in more. It just that....well, it has been so many years.

Re: Royals leading AL Central!!!!!!
I go through this every 2 years or so when the royals come out hot living in southwest iowa. I just tell them to enjoy it for the moment and drink their kool-aid but just realize that in a while they'll start feeling groggy and wonder what the Sox, Twins and Tigers were doing next to the punch bowl with that bottle in early May.

The problem with using the Twin's comparison is that they now have a payroll in the top 15 or so(yeah….I didn't realize this either) . Something like $115M for 2011. The Royals remain near the bottom at something like $36M. That is quite a disparity. I'm to lazy to find the link, but there was just a story in the Register a couple days ago about all the MLB teams' payrolls. -

Are the Royals going to win the central, no. But will they be competitive? Yes. And the cavalry is coming, and when it does watch out. There is nothing in the history of this ownership that suggests the Royals are committed to winning. This includes the quality of prospects in the farm system. The Royals have had above average prospects for some time now. Allard Baird spoke of the great prospects in the fold from the time he took the GM job over ten years ago and now Moore does the same. Yet the template remains the same. Sign a few affordable, quality players like Butler or Soria or Greinke, and if they increase in value deal them for prospects. Win just enough games to keep people coming and stay in the black financially. Repeat cycle.

When Hosmer and Moustakas and the other studs get here, and if they produce like those guys, then they will get signed long term as well.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. -

Yes but those same publications, including SI who just had a full spread on the Royals minor leagues, have said they will be the AL Central champs in a year or two.

When Baird took over there were a few top level prospects, but the rest of the system was a complete waste. That is why they had to sign worthless veterans to fill out the roster because the minor league system couldn't fill out a utility infielder or 8th inning guy. The template is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NOW. They only signed Francouer and Cabrera to one year deals and have been told they are just keeping the seat warm till the system is ready. When Baird was here they minor league system was AWFUL and they had little to no international presence. Now the Royals have spent the second most money in the DR of all teams in baseball. Have one of the nicest academias down there and continue to sign prospects for over slot money in the draft. In the Baird years they avoided Boras clients and ended up with Chris Lubanski and Mitch Maier in the first round. It takes a very long time to rebuild an entire minor league system that was depleted and it is about to come to fruition, and the long term deals will come for the guys that show they can play in the major leagues.
Please if you have no idea, and just want to hate, keep it to yourself because you look like an idiot.

With all the young talent we have, we will have a very cheap payroll for the majority of the team for the next several seasons, and we will have flexibility to hopefully sign a couple of impact free agents (please no Jose Guillens).
