I was questioning the legality of them. I mean if the trooper tells you to take a string of mardi gras beads of your rear view mirror wouldn't a flashing light in your back window be more 'dangerous'?

As long as the red light isn't facing the front it is legal(on back windows). It doesn't look like it flashes at all. Anything hanging from your rearview mirror is considered to be obstructing your vision and is illegal(Don't get me started on the big GPSs that people put right in their line of sight).

OR, the handicapped cards left hanging down from the mirror which is clearly an obstruction of vision and states so on the card. IB
From what I can tell, they are motion detecting. When the car is parked it turns off after a few moments. There is sensor inside that activates the light.
