I'll throw this one out there.
Safe Men - Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Giamatti.
Hilarious movie, well written, pretty much everything you would want. For some reason, it never really took hold. Well worth watching.

It might depend on who I'm talking to (because some people know it and others have no idea what I'm talking about), but Heathers was the first movie that popped into my mind. I never even heard of this movie until my English 105 class in the spring of 1998 (and by then the movie was a decade old). IMO it might very well be Christian Slater at his very best.

Another great one is Scotland, PA. It's modern, comedic, retelling of Macbeth set in the 1970's. Very funny. Helps if you are familiar with the original story. The entire soundtrack is Bad Company, so that helps.
I don't know if it was very well known when it came out, but I hadn't heard of it before I watched it.
