How do you grill your brats
Man I've seen a ton of different ways to do it.
I used to struggle with the art of cooking them until about a year ago.
I poke them open ahead of time. Boil for 15 minutes in beer and onions. Throw on grill for a couple minutes each side to toughen up the skin. Best way I've found to do it and they tast damn good.
Curious what techniques others use?
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -

Curious what techniques others use? Nothing wrong with that technique.

Curious what techniques others use? You poke them? Thats about the number one rule I have when cooking brats...dont let the casing break.

Re: How do you grill your brats
I always just cut the casing off of them and then grill them straight up. Much better than having to bite and chew through that nasty skin.

Re: How do you grill your brats
I boil them in water (or beer) before hand then grill.
I know lots of people that throw them on the grill raw and then proceed to burn the hell out of them.

Re: How do you grill your brats
I know some guys that love boiling them in beer AFTER grilling them. We have been getting our brats from the Iowa State Animal Science Meat Dept and they are killer, but you cant really boil them, the casing turn to crap. But they turn out perfect straight off the grill. If you anyone is ever near Kildee on certain days of the week they sell them there, delicious and cheap too.

I use fire. I find that it helps.

Should you not want to boil and instead just use the grill, make sure you keep it on fairly low heat. It will take a few minutes longer, but the skin won't be all chared up and the brat will still be nice and juicy.

Re: How do you grill your brats
One time I wrapped cedar filled brats in bacon, then wrapped the bacon brats in tin foil so the bacon wouldn't fall apart or have the bacon catch on fire from the grease. They were pretty tasty if I remember correctly.

Re: How do you grill your brats
Regardless of how you grill them, throw a slice of mozzarella cheese on them. Amazing difference.

How do you grill your brats Generally I'll tie them to a rotissierrie--but usually their mother intervenes before I can get the coals lit!
