Not with a family to feed. I can put up with a lot of crap from my job to make sure my family is taken care of.

If you're young and single without a care in the world, why not? It's just a job. You can do anything temporarily and have enough money for rent, food and beer.

This. I've quit plenty of jobs but that was before I had kids and a house to pay for.

I am guessing most people find their job boring or mind numbing at SOME point but probobly not the best idea to leave a job because of that. The other reasons, I could see someone leaving their job without having another lined up...

I'm not brave enough to leave my job without having another offer on the table...But thats just me.

I'm currently in that situation, left a little over a month ago. Didn't have anything concrete lined up but have found plenty to do to keep me occupied. Just waited for my phone to ring after word got out the I jumped ship. Currently working on my next move. Didn't have a lot to worry about since I don't have a family.

I left because I was sick of it. It was no longer challenging and I was tired of answering for other peoples sins. Now they get to answer for them and I don't have to listen customers complain. The best part, I will soon get to pick my customers.

Used to do it all the time. Then went about a year without a job and never did it again, all pre-family.

My experience is future employers are more interested in hiring "currently employed" individuals vs those without a job. You can tell them whatever you want, but when you don't have a job is leads them to think there is something wrong (you got fired, are a malcontent, whatever. You can't control what they think). But if you are still working, they often have a higher opinion of you. Plus they anticipate they have to offer you more money to get you to leave, thus increasing your leverage.

I did it once, the summer pre college because I was sick of my job. I had worked since I was 14 through HS including during sports; which was sole crushing to go to school, practice til 6:30, and then work until 10pm.

Quitting felt awesome for the one week I sat on my parents couch. Then my dad came home from lunch and said the company he worked for needed a pee-on for the summer. Damn you fiscally responsible 17 year-old me.

Good point. The smartest thing to do is to have something lined up before you leave, that is the obvious answer. I mean it is always better to get a paycheck than not receiving one at all.

I guess the question stems from my current situation. I started a position and the environment that I walked into was very negative. Everyone talked bad about the person I replaced and the supervisor that is currently there. However, everyone that I have been in contact with as far a volunteer help to members of the facility have all said unflattering things about him as well. I work with the public and organize events, however there has been no training for my 5 months being employed there. I like to figure things out on my own, but would rather be shown the process first so we/I do not look like a fool in the customers eyes, which hurts business. We have a web page, but it has not been updated for 3-4 years and has old programs on it as well and when we send our brochure out to the schools to promote or programs, we miss the last day of school and have to give it to them at the end of summer (most programs are over). So essentially, since there is little to do to fill up my time, I try and stay busy by cleaning. I guess after a few months of this a normal person would get frustrated and feel like they are wasting there time. I am not a paycheck employee, I like to get rewarded for my hard work!
