Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
...when they blow the whistle for POTENTIAL 70mph winds.
Re: Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
Some tornados only produce 65 MPH winds...so whats the difference?
Re: Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
Better safe than sorry. It doesnt cost you anything to hide your family in the basement. Costs you everything if you dont and something strikes.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!!!
Re: Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
Last year a tornado hit my neighbors house and went down the street ripping out fences and roofs, NO sirens. Last week I'm mowing my yard and the sirens go off, it started raining 40 minutes later.
Very inconsistent!

Sounds like you lucked out:confused:
Re: Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
Sirens are used for danger. 70 mph is nothing top sneeze at if driving.
Re: Hard to take tornado sirens seriously.....
The change they made to when they sound the sirens was a very very stupid change. People are going to get lulled in to a sense of complacency and it's already happening. I don't need to cower in my basement over 70 mph winds.

If you can figure out how to turn on a computer, but honestly can't see the difference between 65mph saturated wind and 65mph swirling, concentrated vortex of doom wind, then it is already too late.

Hearing a siren in a car isn't an easy task, especially outside of stop-go traffic. Traveling at 60-70 mph with the radio on combined with general noise associated with driving, especially if you drive a Ford. Then we have the whole doppler effect to contend with......what a headache.

Agreed. Last year a lady in CR was out in her back yard, and was killed by a large branch from windy conditions.
Another place I avoid in a windstorm? A fricking convenient store canopy covering gas pumps. Those things topple occasionally and take out people, or total cars

When I braced my life for a blizzard over the winter, not once did hear sirens go off for the CONFIRMED 65+ mph winds, sustained winds at 40-45. My house shook for 3 hours. Granted, I had about 3 days warning compared to a few hours.
