Just one of the “prices” you pay for flying a budget airline.
It is like anything you buy that is less expensive. You’re going to give up something in order to save money. It just depends on what that savings is worth to you.

You aren't likely to get on any plane anymore showing up less than 45 minutes before a flight. You might get lucky at DSM with that, but I wouldn't try it anywhere else.
When I fly out for business, I usually show up no more than 1 hour before my flight and I have shown up 40 minutes before and I don't have any trouble making my flight. Although I always carry-on and use the self-service machines to print my ticket.
I am actually flying on Allegiant this Friday to Vegas. I love the 9:50 flight because I am not planning on getting a hotel room until Saturday. Yeah I also noticed all those fees but I avoided them because I don't care where I sit and I am only bringing a backpack.
I really liked it when Allegiant flew into Orlando international but now they fly into Orlando Sanford that is way in the north end of town. It isn't a huge deal but international is closer to Disney and Universal.
we got through DSM last friday in under 15 minutes. thats the nice thing about flying out of a smaller airport. when we came back through salt lake city it took about an hour or so at least to get to our gate. i actually think airport security is a lot faster than it has been in the past. dsm used to take about 20 minutes just to get through security
I'd pay more for Allegiant to Vegas if I had to. Direct flight is key.
Their website is tricky... if i remember correctly you can get out of most of those fees they tack on if you click through it right
I went with them for the 3rd and final time over the last extended weekend. Out going flight ended up being close to 4 hours late after they changed the initial time, returning flight was 3 hours late. From now on I will deal with the lay overs just to get to Vegas at a decent time.
I've been to vegas about 7 times in the last 9 years, and Allegiant was always flyingout at the crack of dawn, not a fan of the late night departure if that's true. Only once did we not fly Allegiant, with a layover in Mspls, never again. Being in Vegas in 2.5 hours is worth a little extra. And tickets are cheaper if you go buy them at the counter, but they only do that a few hours a week.
I admit that it was my fault and they do print it on the tickets. That's why I'm not complaining about not getting my money back.
Last time I flew out of Des Moines it took me 7 minutes to check in and get through security. That is why I don't bother getting to the DSM airport early and for this flight I just happened to be running late. With any other airline I would have made my flight with plenty of time to spare.
It might be stupid if it was my intent to get there 43 minutes early. It would be just as stupid to assume that was my intent.
I always try to get to the DSM airport 1 hour before my flight. All other big airports I arrive 2 hours early.
My point is that ONE TIME I was running late and I missed my flight but I would have had plenty of time to spare if I flew on any other airline.
I have flown that flight probably 50 times. That's far from the norm. Allegiant is very predictable. You know your plane is coming in from Vegas 100% of the time. So before you leave home check flight 496 from Vegas. If it's running late you might as well run late also.
